Marketing for Phone and Electronics Sellers in Ghana

Ghanaian electronics buyers fear fakes and refurbished phones sold as new. Win them with honest labels, proof they can check, model-and-price pages, fast WhatsApp replies and pay on delivery.

Phone and electronics sellers in Ghana don't have a demand problem. Every day, people in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi type "iPhone 15 price in Ghana" or "best laptop for university students" into Google. The problem is fear: buyers have been burnt by fakes, by "new" phones that turned out to be refurbished, and by sellers who stopped replying the day after payment.

The seller who removes that fear tends to win, often at a higher price than the shop down the road. This guide shows how.

Why is selling electronics in Ghana so hard?

It's hard because the buyer assumes they will be cheated until you prove otherwise. Everyone knows a story. A cousin bought a "brand new" iPhone and the battery health was 81% on day one. A friend's laptop charger was a copy that died in a week. Someone paid a deposit to an Instagram seller who then blocked them.

So the buyer arrives with a list of silent questions:

  • Is this the real thing, or a clone?
  • Is it new, refurbished, UK used or home used, and will you tell me the truth?
  • If it fails next month, will I find you?
  • If I send MoMo first, will the phone ever arrive?

Many sellers answer none of these. Their adverts are a flyer of ten phones, a price list and "DM for more". Their Instagram is product photos lifted from the manufacturer's website. The buyer sees nothing that separates them from the seller at Circle who sold their cousin the dodgy iPhone.

What has changed for electronics sellers?

The way Ghanaians research and buy electronics has moved online, and that rewards sellers who publish proof.

  • Buyers search the exact model. They type the model name plus "price in Ghana", compare three or four sellers, then message the one that looks most trustworthy.
  • Buyers ask AI assistants. Questions like "best phone under GH₵ 3,000 in Ghana" now go to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers, which pull from pages that compare and explain.
  • Meta's ad system needs variety. Meta's ad delivery now uses your creative to work out who should see it. One flyer gives it one way to find buyers. Ten different videos give it ten.
  • Video costs less to make. A phone, a ring light and AI editing tools can turn out a week of product videos in an afternoon.
  • MoMo, WhatsApp and pay on delivery are how Ghana buys. The checkout that feels safest wins.

Step 1: Label every product honestly

One of the fastest ways to earn trust is to describe condition precisely, every time, using words that mean one thing. Google's Merchant Center guidelines give a useful standard:

LabelWhat it meansWhat to show the buyer
NewNever used, in its original packaging, unopenedSealed box on video, serial number on the box
RefurbishedNot new, professionally restored to working order, looks new and comes with a warrantyWho refurbished it, the warranty in writing, battery health
UsedSecond hand, or modified from the original conditionCondition grade, scratches on camera, battery health, what's missing from the box

Google describes refurbished as a product "professionally restored to working order" that "comes with a warranty". If your "refurbished" phone has no warranty, call it used.

Put the label in the advert, the product page, the WhatsApp reply and the receipt. For used iPhones, show the battery health screen (Settings, then Battery). Buyers in Ghana use "UK used" and "home used" loosely, so define what you mean on your website and stick to it.

This can feel like it will cost you sales. It usually does the opposite. The buyer who was afraid of being lied to now has a reason to choose you.

Step 2: Make "genuine" something buyers can check

A claim of "100% original" is worthless because every seller makes it. Proof the buyer can check is worth a lot.

  • Unboxing videos of the actual stock, with the seal, the serial number and the box label clearly visible.
  • Manufacturer checks. Apple's Check Coverage page (checkcoverage.apple.com) lets anyone enter an iPhone's serial number and see the device and its warranty status. Offer to send the serial number before payment so the buyer can check it themselves.
  • A written warranty that says what's covered, for how long and how to claim.
  • A receipt or invoice with the serial or IMEI number on it.
  • A real address. A short video walking from the roadside into your shop does more than any logo.
  • Reviews from named buyers, ideally on your Google Business Profile, plus chat screenshots (with permission). See how to collect customer reviews and testimonials.

There is a commercial reason to be strict about this too. Google Ads bans the sale of counterfeit goods, including products described as "replica", "clone" or "fake" versions of a brand, and Google says it can suspend accounts that break this rule without warning. Genuine sellers can advertise confidently where copy sellers can't.

Step 3: Win the "price in Ghana" search

The buyer who types a model and "price in Ghana" is ready to buy this week, so build a page for each popular model that answers that search better than anyone.

A strong model page has:

  • The current price for each condition, with the date you last updated it.
  • What's in the box, and what isn't.
  • Key specs in plain English: battery life, storage, camera, whether it supports dual SIM.
  • Your warranty and return terms.
  • Delivery times for Accra, Kumasi and the rest of the country, and whether pay on delivery is available.
  • A "Chat on WhatsApp" button that opens with the model name already typed.

Keep prices current. A page showing last year's price makes you look either dishonest or closed. Then run Google Search ads on the same model searches so you appear at the top while the page earns its place in the free results. Our guide to Google Ads in Ghana covers the setup, and our Google Ads and SEO and content services do this work for you.

Write the opening of each page as a direct answer, in this pattern: "[Model and storage] costs [price] new at our [area] shop, with a [length] warranty and delivery across Ghana." A sentence like that is easy for Google's AI answers and ChatGPT to quote.

Step 4: Publish comparison content that helps people decide

Most electronics buyers are stuck between two or three options, and the seller who helps them choose often gets the sale. Comparison content turns you from a price list into an adviser.

Ideas that work in Ghana:

  • "iPhone 13 or iPhone 14: which is better value right now?"
  • "Best laptops for KNUST and Legon students"
  • "Which power bank or UPS keeps you going through ECG power cuts?"
  • "New Tecno or used Samsung for the same money?"
  • "How to check if a used iPhone is genuine before you pay"

Each one works as a website article, a 45-second Reel or TikTok, and a WhatsApp broadcast. A table comparing price, battery, camera and storage is a format AI assistants can quote easily.

Step 5: Build a WhatsApp sales flow that closes

Many electronics sales in Ghana finish in a WhatsApp chat, so the chat needs a script, not improvisation. Here is a flow to start from:

  1. Reply within minutes with price, condition, warranty and delivery in one message.
  2. Offer proof unprompted: "Would you like a video of this exact unit with the serial number?"
  3. Answer the fear directly: what happens if it's faulty, and how to reach you.
  4. Give payment options: MoMo to a registered business name, card for diaspora buyers, or pay on delivery.
  5. Confirm the order in writing: model, condition, price, delivery time and warranty.
  6. Follow up the next day if they went quiet, and a week after delivery to ask for a review.

Send buyers to the chat with click-to-WhatsApp ads. Watch for fraud running the other way too: always confirm MoMo payments in your own wallet before releasing stock. See how to spot fake MoMo screenshots. Our WhatsApp marketing service sets this flow up for you.

Should you offer pay on delivery?

Yes, for most first-time buyers in the cities you can reach quickly, because it removes the biggest fear: paying and receiving nothing. The buyer can open the box, switch the phone on and check the serial before handing over cash or MoMo.

Protect yourself with a confirmation call before dispatch, a small commitment fee for upcountry orders, and clear rules for what happens if the buyer refuses a working item. Our guide to reducing failed deliveries goes into detail. PayLead, the selling platform from Wura Group (MediaWura's parent company), offers a checkout with MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo MoMo, cards and pay on delivery, so buyers can choose the option they trust.

Which ads work for phones and electronics?

The adverts that sell electronics show proof, not just product. On Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, test several genuinely different ideas each week:

  • An unboxing with the seal broken on camera.
  • "Three ways to check a used iPhone before you pay."
  • A side-by-side comparison of two popular models.
  • A real customer chat (with permission) saying the phone arrived as described.
  • Your shopfront, your staff and your warranty card.

Keep the people and products real. AI tools are excellent for scripts, captions, voiceovers and editing, but in a category ruled by fear of fakes, AI-generated product footage is the wrong idea. Pair the creative with Google Search for model-specific searches and retargeting for people who visited a model page. Our e-commerce ads and AI video ads services cover both.

What MediaWura would do

We do the marketing for MachineWura, Wura Group's genuine electronics brand, so this is a market we work in every week. For an electronics seller, we would:

  1. Audit your current adverts, product listings and WhatsApp chats to find where buyers lose trust.
  2. Set condition labels, warranty wording and proof assets you can use everywhere.
  3. Build model pages that answer "price in Ghana" searches, and keep them current.
  4. Run Google Search for high-intent model searches and Meta ads built on proof.
  5. Write your WhatsApp sales flow and set up checkout with MoMo and pay on delivery.
  6. Track which adverts produce paid orders, not just messages.

Common questions

Should I show prices in my adverts?

Usually yes. Electronics buyers compare prices before they message, and a hidden price makes many of them assume you're expensive or hiding something. If prices change daily, show a "from" price and update it weekly.

How do I compete with cheaper sellers?

Don't compete on price alone. Compete on certainty: honest labels, a written warranty, proof videos and pay on delivery. Many buyers will pay more to avoid being cheated.

Can I advertise refurbished or used phones on Google and Facebook?

Yes, as long as they are genuine and described honestly. What platforms ban is counterfeit goods and misleading claims, so label the condition clearly everywhere.

Is Instagram or a website better for selling electronics?

You need both. Instagram and TikTok build attention and trust; a website with model pages captures Google searches and gives AI assistants something to quote.

Do I need a physical shop?

It helps a great deal, because buyers want to know where to find you if something goes wrong. If you sell online only, show your team, your address for returns and a clear way to reach you.

If you sell phones, laptops or electronics and want more buyers who trust you before they message, book a free strategy call or message us on WhatsApp. We'll look at your adverts, listings and chats and show you where sales are leaking.
