Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: How to Run Them Without Wasting Money

Ads that open a WhatsApp chat can work brilliantly in Ghana, or flood you with "how much?" messages that never buy. How to set them up, reply and follow up so chats become sales.

Ghanaians like to ask before they buy. Click-to-WhatsApp adverts fit that perfectly: someone taps the advert and lands in a chat with your business, ready to ask their question.

Done well, they're one of the best-performing ad types in Ghana. Done badly, they bury your team in "how much?" messages from people who never pay.

When they work best

  • Products or services where buyers have questions before paying: sizes, fit, delivery, warranty, availability.
  • Higher-value purchases where trust matters.
  • Services that need a conversation to quote.
  • Businesses with someone who can reply quickly during the hours the adverts run.

They work less well for cheap, simple products that people could just buy from a page.

How to set them up

  1. Connect your WhatsApp Business number to your Facebook Page and Meta business account.
  2. In Ads Manager, choose a goal. Sales or Leads campaigns can use WhatsApp as the destination. Optimise for conversations to start; move to purchase optimisation if you can track sales.
  3. Set the location to areas you deliver to.
  4. Write a pre-filled message that tells you which advert they came from: "Hi, I'm interested in the black leather tote."
  5. Set up a welcome message with useful information and a question that moves the chat forward.

The advert matters

Because chats are easy to start, the advert has to filter as well as attract.

  • Show the product clearly. People should know exactly what they're asking about.
  • Give the price or a price range. It cuts out people who'd leave at the price anyway.
  • Say what makes it worth it. Quality, guarantee, delivery speed.
  • Say what happens next. "Tap to chat. We reply within 10 minutes, 8am to 8pm."

Fewer, better chats beat a flood of curious ones.

The reply decides the sale

The first reply should arrive in minutes, not hours. If you run adverts outside working hours, either pause them or make sure the automatic greeting is genuinely helpful.

Then reply like a salesperson, not a price list:

Hi Kofi, thanks for messaging. The tote is GH₵ 380, handmade leather, with free delivery in Accra and Tema. You can pay with MoMo or when it arrives. Would you like it in black or brown?

It answers the price, value, delivery and payment questions at once, and ends with an easy choice. See how to reply when a customer asks "how much?".

Follow up everyone

Most chats don't end in a sale on day one. A short, helpful follow-up over the next week brings many back. See follow-up messages that bring quiet customers back.

Close with a payment link

Don't make buyers send MoMo to a personal number and screenshot it. Send a payment link that confirms automatically, so the order is marked paid and nobody checks screenshots. Checkouts like PayLead let you send links straight into WhatsApp.

Measure the right things

MeasureWhat it tells you
Cost per conversationWhat each chat costs
Reply timeHow fast your team responds
Chat-to-sale rateHow many chats become orders
Cost per saleCost per conversation ÷ chat-to-sale rate

If cost per conversation is GH₵ 5 and one in ten chats buys, each sale costs GH₵ 50. Improving replies from one in ten to one in five halves your cost per sale without touching the advert.

Track sales by advert where you can. See how to track sales that close on WhatsApp.

Common mistakes

  • Running adverts when nobody's available to reply.
  • Hiding the price, which fills the inbox with people who leave at the price.
  • One-word replies.
  • No follow-up.
  • Judging the campaign by number of chats instead of sales.

Common questions

Are click-to-WhatsApp ads cheaper than website ads?

Per result, often yes, because starting a chat is easier than buying. Per sale, it depends on how well your team converts chats.

Can I automate the replies?

Partly. Greetings, common answers and follow-ups can be automated. Keep a person for negotiation and closing. See should you let AI answer your customers?.

Should I use WhatsApp or a landing page?

Test both. Simple products often do better on a page with checkout; higher-trust or complex ones often do better in chat.
