How to Track Sales That Close on WhatsApp

Your adverts bring chats, and the sale happens in WhatsApp, where tracking can't see it. How to connect WhatsApp sales back to the adverts that caused them, from simple to advanced.

Here's a common problem in Ghana. Your adverts send people to WhatsApp. The conversation happens there, the customer pays by MoMo, and the order is delivered. In Ads Manager, the campaign shows "conversations started" and no sales.

So you can't tell which adverts actually make money. Meta can't learn who your buyers are. And you end up judging campaigns on chat volume, which is a poor guide to profit.

Here's how to fix it, from simple to advanced.

Level 1: Tag every chat by source

Use pre-filled messages in your adverts, so each advert starts the chat with a slightly different message:

  • "Hi, I'm interested in the black tote" for one advert.
  • "Hi, I'd like the Christmas bundle" for another.

Then label chats in WhatsApp Business by advert or campaign, and mark which ones bought. A simple spreadsheet with date, source, product and sale value is enough to start.

Level 2: Use payment links

When the customer is ready to buy, send a payment link instead of MoMo details. If the checkout has your Meta Pixel installed, the purchase is recorded and can be connected to your adverts. It also confirms payment automatically. See click-to-WhatsApp ads.

Level 3: Unique links and codes

Give each campaign or influencer its own link or discount code. When the code is used, you know where the sale came from. UTM tags on links (small additions to the web address) let Google Analytics show which campaign brought each visitor.

Level 4: Send sales back to Meta

Meta lets businesses send offline or business-messaging conversion data back to Meta, through tools like the Conversions API. When you record that a chat became a sale, that information can go back to Meta, so it learns which people buy, not just which people chat. Setup depends on your tools and the current options in Meta's Events Manager.

Level 5: A connected system

For businesses with many chats and staff, a CRM or custom system can record each chat's source, track it through to payment and report automatically: cost per chat, cost per sale and return on ad spend by campaign. See do you need a CRM?.

What to measure

MeasureHow to calculate
Cost per chatAd spend ÷ chats started
Chat-to-sale rateSales ÷ chats
Cost per saleAd spend ÷ sales
Revenue per chatSales value ÷ chats
Return on ad spendSales value ÷ ad spend

Why it matters

A campaign with expensive chats can be more profitable than one with cheap chats, if those chats buy more. Without tracking, you might switch off your best campaign.
