Google Ads in Ghana: A Beginner's Guide for Business Owners

How Google Ads works, which campaign types suit Ghanaian businesses, how to choose keywords and avoid wasting money, and how to tell if it's working.

Every day, people in Ghana search Google for exactly what you sell. "Solar installation Accra." "Wedding photographer Kumasi." "Buy iPhone 15 Ghana." These people aren't scrolling for fun. They want to buy, often today.

Google Ads puts your business at the top of those searches. Here's how it works.

How Google Ads works

You choose the searches you want to appear for (keywords), write adverts, and set a budget. When someone searches, Google runs an auction among advertisers. Your position depends on your bid and the quality and relevance of your advert and landing page.

You pay when someone clicks, not when they see your advert.

Most businesses should start with Search. It's the easiest to control and catches people already looking.

Choosing keywords

Think about what a buyer would type, not what you call your product.

  • Buying searches: "price", "buy", "near me", "best", a city name. "Laptop shop East Legon" beats "laptop".
  • Problem searches: "fix leaking roof Accra".
  • Your brand name: so competitors don't take your branded searches.

Use the Keyword Planner inside Google Ads to see search volumes in Ghana. Volumes are lower than in big markets, which can mean lower competition and cheaper clicks. See keyword research for the Ghanaian market.

Block the wrong searches

This is where most money is wasted. Google will match your keywords to related searches, some of them useless.

Add negative keywords for searches you don't want: "free", "jobs", "salary", "course", "PDF", other countries, competitor names you don't want, and products you don't sell. Check the search terms report every week and add more.

Write adverts that match the search

If someone searches "AC repair Tema", your advert should say "AC Repair in Tema, Same-Day Service". Match the words, add your strongest reason to choose you, and include extensions:

  • Call extension, so people can ring you in one tap.
  • Location extension, linked to your Google Business Profile.
  • Sitelinks to key pages.

Send clicks to the right page

Don't send everyone to your homepage. Send AC repair searches to an AC repair page, with prices, proof, location and a call or WhatsApp button. See landing page vs website.

Track what matters

Set up conversion tracking for:

  • Calls from adverts.
  • WhatsApp clicks.
  • Form submissions.
  • Online purchases.

Without tracking, Google's automated bidding can't learn, and you can't tell which keywords bring customers.

Budget

Start with a daily budget you can afford for a month of testing. Ghanaian clicks are often cheaper than in the UK or US, but competitive industries still cost more. See how much Google Ads costs in Ghana.

How to tell if it's working

After two to four weeks, look at:

  • Cost per conversion (call, chat, lead or sale).
  • Which keywords bring conversions, and which just spend.
  • Search terms you should block.
  • Your close rate on Google leads.

Google leads often close faster than social media leads, because the buyer was already looking.

Common questions

Is Google Ads better than Facebook ads?

They do different jobs. Google captures existing demand; Facebook and Instagram create it. Many businesses need both. See SEO vs Google Ads for how Google fits with search over time.

Do I need a website?

You need a page to send people to. Call-only adverts are an option for some service businesses, but a good landing page usually converts better.

Can I manage it myself?

Yes, for small campaigns, if you check search terms weekly. As spend grows, expert management usually pays for itself.
