10 Things to Do Before You Run Your First Facebook Ad
Most first Facebook ad campaigns fail because of what happened before the ad, not the ad itself. Ten things to set up first so your first cedi of ad spend actually brings customers.
Most first Facebook ad campaigns fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the advert. The page it sent people to was slow. Nobody replied to the messages. Paying was complicated. The account was set up in a way that made it hard for Meta to learn.
Do these ten things first and your first ad spend has a real chance of bringing customers.
1. Set up Meta Business Manager properly
Create a Business Manager (now called Business portfolio in Meta's tools) at business.facebook.com. Add your Facebook Page, Instagram account and ad account to it. Make sure the accounts are in your name, not a friend's or an agency's. See how to run Facebook ads in Ghana.
2. Add a payment method that works
Many Ghanaian businesses hit problems paying Meta. Set up a card that works for international payments and test it before you need it. See paying for Facebook ads from Ghana.
3. Install the Meta Pixel and Conversions API
Tracking tells Meta who buys, so it can find more people like them. Install the Pixel on your website or checkout, set up the Conversions API, and test with a real order. See Meta Pixel and Conversions API setup.
4. Decide what a sale is worth
Before spending, know your numbers: average order value, profit per sale, and the most you can pay to win a customer. Without these you can't judge results. See ROAS explained.
5. Choose one offer
Don't advertise your whole shop. Pick one product or offer that already sells, has a good margin and is easy to explain.
6. Build a page for that offer
Send people to a page about that one offer, with the price, proof, answers to doubts and an easy way to pay or message. Not your homepage, not your profile. See landing page mistakes.
7. Make paying easy
MoMo, card and pay on delivery, in as few steps as possible, confirmed automatically. See what PayLead is.
8. Get your WhatsApp ready
Set up WhatsApp Business with quick replies, a catalogue, labels and a greeting message, and decide who will reply and how fast. See WhatsApp Business features.
9. Make several adverts, not one
Prepare at least three to five genuinely different adverts: different hooks, images or videos, and reasons to buy. Meta's system learns from variety. See creative testing framework and AI video ad ideas.
10. Set a realistic test budget and timeline
Give the campaign enough budget and at least a week or two before judging it. Decide in advance what result would make you keep going. See Facebook ads budget in Ghana.

When you launch
- Use the Sales objective (or Leads or messaging if that's how you sell). Not Boost. See Boost Post vs Ads Manager.
- Start with broad targeting and let the creative do the work. See Facebook ad targeting in Ghana.
- Don't change things every day.
- Judge on cost per sale, not likes.
