How to Test Ad Creatives: A Simple Framework for Small Budgets

Creative is now the biggest lever in your Facebook and Instagram ads. A simple, budget-friendly way to test concepts, read the results and find winners every month.

Most businesses don't test creative. They make an advert, run it until it stops working, then make another one. That's not testing, it's hoping.

With Meta's system leaning so heavily on creative, testing is now the main job in advertising. Here's a simple framework that works even on a small budget.

Test concepts, not colours

A concept is a distinct idea: a different reason to buy, told in a different way. Changing the button colour or one word in the headline isn't a new concept, and Meta's system tends to treat near-identical adverts as one. See Meta's Andromeda update.

For one product, concepts might be:

Problem and solution"Tired of bags that peel?"
Social proofReal reviews and customer photos

The framework

Step 1: Pick three to five concepts

Choose the ones you believe in most. For each, make one or two versions with different hooks.

Step 2: Put them in one campaign

Use a single campaign with a Sales or Leads goal and one broad ad set. Let Meta distribute budget among the adverts. Splitting each advert into its own ad set divides your budget and slows learning.

Step 3: Give them time

Run for at least a week, or until each advert has had a fair amount of spend. Don't judge in the first two days.

Step 4: Read the results

Look at:

  • Cost per result: the final judge.
  • Hook rate: for video, how many people watch past the first few seconds.
  • Click-through rate: whether the advert makes people act.
  • Spend share: which adverts Meta chose to spend on. Meta often spends most on what it thinks will work.

Step 5: Decide

  • Winners: keep running, and make new versions with different hooks.
  • Promising: keep for another week.
  • Losers: switch off.

Step 6: Repeat every week or two

Add new concepts while winners are still working, so you always have the next winner ready. Keep a simple log of what you tested and what won.

A budget example

With GH₵ 100 a day, one campaign testing four concepts for 10 days spends GH₵ 1,000. That's enough to see clear differences in most accounts. As winners emerge, move most budget to them and keep 20 to 30% for testing new concepts.

Where to get enough creative

The barrier to testing has always been cost. Every concept used to need a shoot. With AI video and AI image production, you can make many concepts for the price of one shoot. See AI video ads and AI ads vs a real shoot.

What winning tells you

Every winner teaches you something about your buyers. If the "is it original?" concept wins, authenticity is the big fear; put it in your product page, your WhatsApp replies and your packaging too. Testing adverts is really testing your message.

Common questions

How many adverts should I run at once?

Enough to give Meta real variety, but not so many that each gets almost no spend. For small budgets, three to six adverts per campaign is a good range.

Should I use A/B tests in Ads Manager?

They're useful for clean, controlled comparisons, but slower and more expensive. For most small businesses, letting adverts compete inside one campaign is enough.
