How Much Should a Ghanaian Business Spend on Facebook Ads Each Month?

How to set your Facebook and Instagram ad budget from your own numbers, how much you need to test, and when to spend more.

"How much should I spend?" is the second question everyone asks about Facebook ads, right after "how much does it cost?". The answer comes from your own numbers, not someone else's.

Here's how to work it out.

Start with what a customer is worth

Your budget depends on how much you can afford to pay for a sale.

  1. Average order value: what does a typical customer spend per order?
  2. Gross margin: after product, packaging and delivery, what percentage is left?
  3. Break-even cost per sale: average order × margin.

If your average order is GH₵ 200 and your margin is 45%, you can spend up to GH₵ 90 to win a sale and break even on the first order.

If customers come back, you can afford more. A customer who buys four times a year is worth much more than their first order. See customer lifetime value.

Then think about how much data Meta needs

Meta's system learns from results. Each ad set needs a steady flow of conversions, roughly 50 a week, to finish learning and optimise properly. You don't always need to hit that, but the further below it you are, the slower and noisier the learning.

So a useful check is: target cost per result × results needed per week.

If a WhatsApp chat costs about GH₵ 8 and you optimise for chats, 50 a week is about GH₵ 400 a week. If a sale costs GH₵ 50 and you optimise for purchases, 50 a week is GH₵ 2,500 a week. That's why smaller budgets often optimise for an earlier step, like add to cart or chats, until volume grows.

Three phases

PhaseDaily budgetGoal
Testing, first 2 to 4 weeksGH₵ 50 to GH₵ 100 per campaignFind adverts and audiences that sell
RunningGH₵ 100 to GH₵ 300Steady results at a cost you can afford
ScalingGH₵ 300+More sales from proven adverts

For the first month, plan GH₵ 1,500 to GH₵ 3,000 at minimum. Most businesses we work with, turning over GH₵ 20,000 or more a month, spend GH₵ 3,000 to GH₵ 10,000 a month on Meta once they know what works.

A simple rule of thumb

Many growing businesses spend 5 to 15% of revenue on marketing overall, with paid ads taking a big share. Newer brands pushing for growth often spend more, for a while. See how much to spend on marketing.

But the percentage matters less than the return. If every GH₵ 1 in ads brings back GH₵ 4 in sales at a healthy margin, the question isn't "how much should I spend?" but "how fast can we fulfil more orders?".

When to spend more

Raise the budget when:

  • Cost per sale has been at or under target for at least a week.
  • You can handle more orders, with stock, staff and delivery.
  • You have fresh creative ready, because more spend tires adverts faster.

Raise it gradually, around 20% every few days. Big jumps can push the campaign back into learning.

When to spend less

  • Cost per sale has risen above break-even for over a week and fresh creative hasn't helped.
  • You're running out of stock or can't deliver on time.
  • Tracking is broken. Fix it before spending more.

Don't forget creative

A bigger budget burns through adverts faster. Budget for creative too, so you always have new concepts ready. With AI production, you can make far more adverts than a traditional shoot allows. See AI video ads.

Common questions

Can I start with GH₵ 20 a day?

You can, but it's hard for Meta to learn on that budget, and results will be patchy. Better to run one campaign at GH₵ 50 to GH₵ 100 a day than several at GH₵ 20.

Is my ad budget part of the agency fee?

It shouldn't be. Ad spend is paid directly to Meta from your own account. Agency fees are separate.

How long before I know if it's working?

Give a campaign two weeks. Judge on cost per sale and return on ad spend, not likes. See ROAS explained.
