Google AI Mode: What It Changes for Businesses
Google AI Mode answers complex questions in a conversation, with links, and it's available in Ghana. Buyers research and compare inside Google, so your pages need to be among the sources it uses.
Google AI Mode is a conversational search mode inside Google that answers complex questions with an AI-written response, links to supporting websites and room for follow-up questions. For businesses it means more of a buyer's research and comparison happens inside Google before anyone clicks, so the pages Google uses as sources gain influence and generic pages lose it. It's available in Ghana, in English and Akan, and Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond good SEO.
Here is what AI Mode is, how it shows links, and what a business should change.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a separate search experience, reached from a tab on Google's results page, that replies with an AI-generated answer instead of a list of results.
Google's help page describes it as its "most powerful AI search experience". You can ask by typing, speaking, uploading a photo or a PDF, or pasting a web address, then keep asking follow-up questions in the same conversation. Signed-in users with history turned on can pick up old conversations, and Google says AI Mode can personalise answers using past searches for people aged 18 or over who have history and personalised recommendations enabled.
There are three ways in, according to Google: go to google.com/ai, type a question on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app's home screen.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are short summaries that appear above normal results for some searches, while AI Mode is a full conversation you choose to enter.
| Classic results | AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | Ten blue links, maps, ads | An AI summary above the results | A full AI answer in a chat-style view |
| When it appears | Every search | Only when Google thinks it adds value | When the user opens AI Mode |
| Follow-up questions | New search each time | Can continue into AI Mode | Built in |
| Links | The results themselves | Links to sources in and beside the summary | Inline links, source links and more links at the end |
| Best for | Simple, navigational searches | Quick answers | Research, comparisons, planning |
Google's Search Central documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary". Appearing in one doesn't mean you'll appear in the other. For more on the summaries, read what AI Overviews mean for local businesses in Ghana.
Is Google AI Mode available in Ghana?
Yes. Google's AI Mode help page lists Ghana among its supported countries, and English and Akan among its supported languages.
Google announced AI Mode for Africa on 21 August 2025, then expanded it in October 2025 to over 200 countries and territories and more than 35 new languages. African languages including Akan, Hausa, Yorùbá and Swahili are now on Google's supported list too. Some extras are narrower. Google says its interactive visuals feature is for signed-in users in English, and its most advanced model option in AI Mode is limited to paying Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Features change often, so check Google's AI Mode help page for the current list before you plan around a specific one.
How does AI Mode find its answers?
AI Mode breaks a question into smaller questions, searches for each one at the same time, and combines what it finds into one answer.
Google calls this "query fan-out". Ask "Which is better for a small Accra restaurant, a delivery app or my own WhatsApp ordering?" and AI Mode may run separate searches on delivery app commissions in Ghana, WhatsApp Business ordering, restaurant margins and customer habits, then put the answer together with links to the pages it used.
Two things follow for businesses:
- More pages get a chance. Google says fan-out lets it show "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than a classic search. A page that answers one sub-question well can be cited even if it would never rank first for the whole query.
- Narrow, specific pages tend to do well. The sub-questions are specific, so pages that answer specific questions directly are more useful to AI Mode than broad pages that cover everything lightly.
Google also says AI Mode will show ordinary web links instead of an AI answer when it isn't confident enough in the response.
How does AI Mode show links to websites?
AI Mode shows links inside the answer, alongside it, and in a set of further reading at the end, and Google keeps changing the layout.
On 15 October 2026 Google announced another round of link changes for AI Mode and AI Overviews. It said it has made "continued and substantial increases" to inline links and will show them higher up in responses more often. It's making the links at the end of some answers more prominent, with image thumbnails. It's rolling out carousels of timely articles to more countries and languages, highlighting each user's Preferred Sources. It's also testing a dedicated section at the top of some answers for the one or two official pages a task needs, and clickable creator names on video results.
Google is also testing adverts inside AI Mode. What's live, and in which markets, changes often, so check your Google Ads account rather than relying on headlines. See Google Ads in Ghana.
What changes for businesses?
AI Mode changes where buyers do their research, not whether they need trustworthy businesses to buy from.
Research happens before the click
A buyer can compare three gym memberships in East Legon, ask about prices and parking, and narrow down to one without visiting a single website. When they do click, they arrive further along and more ready to act. Google's documentation says that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality", with users more likely to spend more time on the site.
Being the source matters more than ranking first
When AI Mode builds its answer from several pages, the businesses it names and links are the ones whose pages answered a sub-question clearly. That's a different contest from ranking first for one keyword.
Comparisons pull in third-party pages
Questions like "best accounting firm in Accra for small businesses" send AI Mode to reviews, directories and comparison articles. If you're not on those pages, you're less likely to be in the answer. See why AI recommends brands from "best of" lists.
Your Business Profile and product data feed it
Google's AI features guide tells site owners to keep their Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. For local businesses, that profile is still the foundation. See how to set up Google My Business.
What does Google say you should do?
Google's official position is that AI Mode needs no special optimisation: the same SEO fundamentals apply.
Its Search Central guide on AI features says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link, and that "there are no additional technical requirements". It says you don't need "AI text files" or special schema markup. It recommends allowing crawling in robots.txt and in your CDN, linking pages internally, putting important content in text, keeping structured data consistent with the visible page, and offering a good page experience.
It also clarifies the controls. Googlebot's robots.txt rules govern crawling for Search, including AI Mode. Snippet controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, or noindex, limit what's shown. Google-Extended affects Gemini training and the Gemini app, not AI Mode. What to do this month
These steps follow Google's guidance and what fan-out rewards.
- Check you're indexed. Use Google Search Console to confirm your key service and product pages are indexed and not blocked.
- Give each service and location its own page. "Event decoration in Kumasi" and "corporate event decoration in Accra" deserve separate, specific pages.
- Answer sub-questions directly. Under question headings, put the answer first: price ranges in GH₵, timelines, areas served, payment options such as MoMo, and what's included.
- Add a short FAQ to each service page, with the questions customers ask on WhatsApp and on the phone.
- Make your facts match everywhere. Website, Business Profile, social profiles and directories. See entity SEO.
- Keep your Business Profile complete and active, with reviews that mention what you do and where. See local SEO in Ghana.
- Get on the lists. Directories, comparison articles and local press that AI Mode cites for your category.
- Measure by enquiries, not just clicks. Google says AI Mode traffic is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type, so watch total impressions and clicks alongside the enquiries and sales they bring.
Common questions
Will AI Mode replace normal Google results?
Not for now. AI Mode is a separate experience that people choose to open, and classic results and AI Overviews still appear in the main search view.
Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI Mode?
No. Google's documentation says no special schema or AI text files are needed. Normal, accurate structured data is still good practice.
Can I stop my site appearing in AI Mode?
Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what's shown, but these also limit your normal search appearance. Blocking Google-Extended doesn't remove you from AI Mode.
Does AI Mode work in Akan?
Yes. Google's help page lists Akan among AI Mode's supported languages, alongside English.
How do I know if AI Mode sends me visitors?
Google includes AI Mode traffic in Search Console's Performance report under "Web". Combine it with analytics and by asking new customers how they found you.
Can anyone guarantee my business appears in AI Mode?
No. Google says indexing and serving aren't guaranteed, even for pages that follow every guideline. Anyone promising placement is guessing.
