Google AI Overviews: What They Mean for Local Businesses in Ghana
Google now answers many searches with an AI summary before the links. What AI Overviews are, how they affect clicks to your website, and how to make sure Google's AI gets your business right.
Search Google for "how to choose a solar inverter" and, for many searches, you'll see an AI-written summary at the top before any website links. Google calls these AI Overviews.
They change how people use search, and how businesses get found.
What AI Overviews are
AI Overviews are short answers written by Google's AI, drawing on information from across the web. They often include links to the sources used. They appear for many informational searches, and increasingly for others.
For local searches like "restaurants near me" or "car repair Spintex", Google still leans heavily on its map results and Google Business Profiles, though AI features are spreading there too.
What changes for businesses
Fewer clicks for simple questions
If Google answers "what's the best time to plant maize in Ghana?" directly, fewer people click through to the article that answered it. Informational content may get fewer visits even if it ranks well.
Being the source matters
When your page is used as a source and linked in the overview, you gain visibility and trust, even if fewer people click. Being cited is the new ranking.
Local profiles matter more
For "near me" and local searches, your Google Business Profile is still central: reviews, categories, photos, hours and services. AI features draw on it.
How to show up in AI Overviews
There's no special trick. Google says the same things that help pages rank in search help them appear in AI features. In practice:
- Answer questions clearly and early. Put the direct answer near the top of the page, then the detail.
- Be genuinely useful. Original experience, local knowledge, real examples and specifics beat generic content.
- Use clear structure. Headings that match questions, short paragraphs, lists and tables.
- Keep facts accurate and current. Prices, hours, laws and processes change.
- Make your business information consistent across your website, Google profile and other listings.
- Use structured data for your organisation, products, FAQs and reviews.
- Build reputation through reviews and mentions on other reputable sites.
For local businesses specifically
- Complete every part of your Google Business Profile. See how to set up Google My Business.
- Collect reviews that mention what you do and where. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Create a page on your website for each service and area you serve.
- Answer the questions customers ask on the phone in FAQs on your site.
Should you still write blog posts?
Yes, but write the kind AI can't easily replace: real experience, local detail, original data, opinions and step-by-step guides from people who've done the work. And remember that informational content also builds the trust that makes people choose you when they're ready to buy.
Measuring the impact
In Google Search Console, watch impressions as well as clicks. You might see impressions hold or rise while clicks fall for some informational queries. Focus on whether enquiries and sales from search are growing, not just traffic.
Common questions
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Google offers some controls over how content is used in snippets, but limiting them can also reduce your visibility in normal search. For most businesses, it's better to aim to be cited.
Do AI Overviews show ads?
Google has been testing and rolling out ads in and around AI features. Google Ads remains a way to appear at the top for commercial searches. See Google Ads in Ghana.
