Local SEO in Ghana: How to Rank in Google Maps

When people search "near me" or add a city name, Google shows a map with three businesses. How local ranking works, and the steps Ghanaian businesses can take to appear there.

Search "pharmacy near me", "hair salon East Legon" or "car mechanic Kumasi" and Google shows a map with a short list of businesses. Most people pick from that list. If you're not in it, you're invisible to them.

That's local SEO: getting your business to appear in local search results and on Google Maps.

How Google ranks local businesses

Google says local results are mainly based on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your business matches what someone searched for.
  • Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or the area they searched.
  • Prominence: how well-known and trusted your business is, including reviews, links and mentions across the web.

You can't change your distance. You can improve relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile

This is the foundation. Choose the most specific category, add every service, write a clear description, set accurate hours, place your pin correctly and add plenty of real photos. See how to set up Google My Business.

Step 2: Get reviews, steadily

Reviews affect both ranking and whether people choose you. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review, and aim for a steady flow rather than a burst. Reviews that mention your service and area help too. See how to get more Google reviews.

Step 3: Keep your details consistent

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, Google profile, Facebook, Instagram, directories and anywhere else you're listed. Inconsistent details confuse Google and customers.

Step 4: Build local pages on your website

Create a page for each main service, and for each area you serve if you serve several. A page for "AC repair in Tema" with real details, prices, photos and reviews is more likely to rank for that search than a generic homepage.

Add your address, a map and structured data for your business on your website.

Step 5: Get mentioned locally

  • Listings in reputable Ghanaian business directories.
  • Local news coverage and community features.
  • Partnerships with local businesses that link to you.
  • Sponsoring or attending local events that list participants online.

Step 6: Stay active

Post updates and offers on your Google profile, add new photos, answer questions and keep hours up to date, especially on holidays. An active profile signals a business that's open and engaged.

Common local SEO mistakes

  • Keyword-stuffed business names, which can get your profile suspended.
  • Wrong categories.
  • A pin in the wrong place.
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices for areas you don't really serve.
  • Buying fake reviews.
  • Ignoring negative reviews.

How long does it take?

Profile fixes can show results within weeks. Climbing for competitive searches in busy areas like central Accra can take months of steady reviews and improvements.

Common questions

I don't have a shop. Can I rank locally?

Yes. Service-area businesses can set the areas they serve and hide their address.

Does social media help local SEO?

Indirectly. Consistent details and an active presence help trust, but your Google profile, reviews and website matter most.
