SEO for Online Shops in Ghana: How to Get Product Pages Found

Name products the way buyers search, write your own descriptions, show GH₵ prices, delivery and MoMo details on the page, add Product structured data and keep out-of-stock pages working.

Product pages get found when they match what buyers type, answer the questions buyers ask before paying, and give search engines clean facts to read. For a Ghanaian online shop, that means titles with brand, model and "price in Ghana", your own descriptions, prices in GH₵, delivery areas and times, MoMo and pay-on-delivery details, real reviews and Product structured data. Many shops in Ghana miss several of these, which is why a well-built shop can overtake bigger competitors.

Why do so many Ghanaian product pages fail to rank?

Many Ghanaian product pages struggle because they say less than the buyer needs to decide. The same supplier description is pasted on dozens of shops, the price says "DM for price", and delivery and payment details live only in WhatsApp chats.

Search engines can't rank a price that isn't on the page. AI assistants can't recommend a shop whose delivery areas aren't written anywhere. And a buyer who has been burned by a fake shop before won't send MoMo to a page that hides the basics. The fixes below address all three problems at once.

How do Ghanaians search for products?

Ghanaian buyers search with a brand, a model and a buying word, or with a category and a place. Each kind of search needs a different kind of page.

Search typeExamplePage that should rank
Exact product and price"iPhone 15 128GB price in Ghana"Product page
Category and place"office chairs in Accra"Category page
Category and budget"laptops under 5,000 cedis"Category page or buying guide
Problem to solve"blender that can grind pepper"Buying guide linking to products
Trust check"[shop name] reviews" or "[shop name] legit"About page, reviews page, Google Business Profile

Build your keyword list from these patterns before you write a word. Our guide to keyword research for the Ghanaian market shows how to find the exact phrases.

How should you write product titles?

Write product titles the way buyers type them: brand, then model, then the variant that changes the price, with "price in Ghana" in the page title tag. Keep the visible heading clean for shoppers.

  1. Title tag (what Google shows): "Samsung Galaxy A16 128GB Price in Ghana | YourShop".
  2. Heading on the page: "Samsung Galaxy A16 (128GB, 4GB RAM)".
  3. URL: short and readable, such as /samsung-galaxy-a16-128gb.

Use one page per product. Put colours on the same page unless people search for a colour separately. Don't stuff every city and keyword into the title; it reads as spam and buyers skip it.

Why should you never copy supplier descriptions?

Copied descriptions make your page one of hundreds of identical pages, so a search engine has no reason to pick yours. Google's guide to optimising for generative AI search says the same about AI answers: it rewards "non-commodity" content with a first-hand point of view, not text that restates what is already everywhere.

Write what only you can say:

  • What's in the box, and what isn't.
  • The warranty you honour in Ghana, and who handles repairs.
  • Whether it needs an adaptor for Ghanaian sockets.
  • How sizes compare to UK and US sizing, from your own returns.
  • Real photos from your shop or warehouse, not only the manufacturer's.
  • The questions customers ask you on WhatsApp, answered on the page.

For a full method, see how to write product descriptions that sell.

What must every product page show?

Every product page should show the price, stock status, delivery, payment and returns in plain text, because these are the facts both buyers and search engines look for first.

ElementWhat to showWhy it matters
PriceGH₵ 2,450, not "DM for price"Matches "price in Ghana" searches; needed for product markup
StockIn stock, out of stock, or back on a dateStops wasted enquiries; feeds availability markup
Delivery"Accra and Tema: same day. Kumasi and Takoradi: 1 to 2 days"Answers one of the first questions buyers ask
PaymentMTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money, card, pay on deliveryBuilds trust and can lift conversion
Returns and warrantyDays allowed, condition, who pays deliveryReduces fear of fakes
ReviewsReal customer reviews with names and datesProof for buyers; rating data for markup
ContactWhatsApp button and phone numberLets hesitant buyers ask before paying

Write delivery and payment details as text, not inside an image. Text can be read by Google and quoted by AI assistants; a flyer graphic cannot. Our guide to payment methods that work in Ghana covers the options behind the payment line.

Which structured data should product pages use?

Product pages should use Product structured data with a nested Offer that carries the price, the currency and the stock status. Google's merchant listing documentation lists name, image and offers as required, with price and priceCurrency inside the offer.

The key properties for a Ghanaian shop:

  • "@type": "Product" with name, image, description and brand.
  • "price": "2450.00" and "priceCurrency": "GHS", the ISO code for the cedi.
  • "availability": "https://schema.org/InStock", or OutOfStock, PreOrder or BackOrder. Google says to give only one value.
  • aggregateRating and review, only for real reviews shown on the page.

Three rules from Google's documentation matter here. Merchant listing results need a price above zero. Only pages where a shopper can actually buy, with you as the seller, are eligible for merchant listings; a page that only says "order on WhatsApp" may only qualify for the simpler product snippet. And Google recommends setting shipping and returns policies once for the whole business under Organization markup, rather than repeating them on every product.

The markup must match what the page shows. A price of GH₵ 2,450 in the code and GH₵ 2,600 on the page is worse than no markup. See schema markup for small businesses for the other types worth adding.

Can Ghanaian shops use Google Merchant Center free listings?

Not at the time of writing. When we checked Google's Merchant Center help page "Show your products for free on Google" in October 2026, Ghana was not on its list of supported countries, and South Africa was the only African country on it. Google says your store needs to sell in a supported country or region to be eligible.

Two practical points follow. First, check the current list before you build a product feed, because Google changes it. Second, if you genuinely sell and deliver to a listed country, such as diaspora customers in the UK, read the eligibility rules for that market. Your Product markup works independently of Merchant Center and still helps Google understand your pages.

What should you do when a product is out of stock?

Keep the page live if the product is coming back, mark it out of stock, and send buyers to alternatives. Remove or redirect only the pages for products that are gone for good.

  1. Temporarily out of stock: keep the page, show "Out of stock, back on 15 November", change availability to OutOfStock, add a "notify me on WhatsApp" button and link to similar products.
  2. Taking orders before stock lands: use PreOrder or BackOrder and say the expected delivery date.
  3. Discontinued, with a direct replacement: redirect (301) to the newer model's page.
  4. Discontinued, with no replacement: if the page still gets visits or has links from other sites, keep it as an information page pointing to the category. Otherwise let it return a 404.
  5. Never redirect every dead product to the homepage.

Don't leave an empty shell. Google's documentation on HTTP status codes says a page that looks like an error or is empty can be reported as a "soft 404", which means it may drop out of results anyway.

How do category pages help?

Category pages win the broader searches, such as "office chairs in Accra" or "ladies' bags in Ghana", so treat them as landing pages rather than plain product grids. Give each a short introduction that answers the obvious questions: price range, delivery areas, how to choose. Link to your best sellers and to the matching buying guide.

Avoid near-empty categories with one or two products, and stop filters (colour, size, price) from creating thousands of indexable URLs that all show the same items.

How does an online shop get recommended by AI shopping answers?

AI assistants recommend shops whose product facts they can read on the shop's own site and confirm elsewhere. That means crawlable pages, clear prices and delivery details, and independent reviews and mentions.

What we know from the platforms' own documentation:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's search index. Google's guide says there are no special requirements beyond normal SEO, and that Merchant Center feeds and Business Profiles can help products and services appear in AI responses.
  • ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot to surface websites. OpenAI's own product feed specification says its standard feed upload currently targets the US, so for a Ghanaian shop the open web is the route that counts today.
  • Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to surface and link sites in its answers, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt.

So the work is:

  1. Allow these crawlers in your robots.txt. Check that your shop platform hasn't blocked them by default.
  2. Put prices, delivery and payment details in plain text on every product page.
  3. Collect reviews on your Google Business Profile and on your own pages.
  4. Get your shop named in independent articles and lists. See why AI recommends brands from "best of" lists.
  5. Keep your shop name, phone number and address identical everywhere.

How long does e-commerce SEO take?

New product pages are often indexed within days to weeks, but ranking against established shops usually takes months. Long, specific searches like a model number plus "price in Ghana" tend to move first. Our guide to how long SEO takes sets out realistic timelines.

Common questions

Do I need a website if I sell on Instagram and WhatsApp?

Yes, if you want to be found in search. Google and AI assistants need a page they can crawl that states your product, price, delivery and payment details, and an Instagram post is a weak substitute.

Should I show prices if competitors copy them?

Yes. Hiding prices costs you "price in Ghana" searches and annoys buyers. Competitors can find your prices anyway by asking on WhatsApp.

Is a marketplace listing enough?

A marketplace listing can rank, but the marketplace owns the page and the customer. Use marketplaces for reach and build your own product pages so the search traffic you earn stays yours.

Can I copy the manufacturer's specifications table?

Yes. Specifications are facts and are expected on the page. Rewrite the description around them in your own words, with details only you know.

How many products should I optimise first?

Start with your 10 to 20 best sellers and highest-margin products. Fix those pages fully before touching the rest of the catalogue.
