How Long Does SEO Take? Honest Timelines for Google and AI Search
Usually months, not weeks. Expect early Google signs in one to three months and real results in six to twelve. Live AI search can reflect changes in days; trained AI knowledge, far slower.
SEO usually takes months, not weeks. A realistic plan expects early signs in Google within one to three months and meaningful results in six to twelve, with new websites and crowded markets at the slow end and local or niche searches at the fast end. AI search runs on two clocks: assistants that search the web live can reflect a change within days of it being indexed, while what an AI model "knows" from its training only changes when a new model is released.
What does Google say about how long SEO takes?
Google says results vary from hours to months. Its SEO Starter Guide puts it plainly: "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months." It advises waiting "a few weeks" before judging whether a change helped.
Google's page on asking it to recrawl your site adds that "crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks", and that requesting a crawl doesn't guarantee a page will be included at all. So even the first step, Google seeing your change, isn't instant.
Anyone promising first-page rankings in 30 days is guessing, or planning something that breaks Google's spam policies.
Why does SEO take so long?
SEO is slow because three separate things have to happen, each on its own timetable.
| Stage | What happens | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Google crawls and indexes your new or changed pages | Days to weeks |
| Evaluation | Google tests where your pages deserve to rank | Weeks to months |
| Authority | Links, mentions and reviews build up so you're trusted | Months to years |
Technical fixes and new pages move through the first two stages quickly. Authority can't be rushed, and in competitive markets it decides who wins.
How long does SEO take for different businesses?
How long SEO takes depends on the age of your site, how competitive your searches are, and whether they are local or national. These are planning ranges, not promises.
| Situation | First signs | Meaningful results |
|---|---|---|
| Established site fixing technical problems | Days to weeks | 1 to 3 months |
| Local business, searches like "dentist in Takoradi" | 2 to 6 weeks | 2 to 6 months |
| Niche B2B service with few competitors | 1 to 2 months | 3 to 6 months |
| New website, moderately competitive searches | 2 to 4 months | 6 to 12 months |
| Competitive national searches, such as "laptops in Ghana" | 3 to 6 months | 12 months or more |
Local searches move faster because Google Business Profile, reviews and proximity carry a lot of weight. A clinic in Kumasi with a complete profile and steady reviews can show up in the map results long before its website ranks nationally. See local SEO in Ghana.
How long does it take to show up in AI search?
AI search has two clocks. Assistants that search the web before answering can use your new page as soon as their search index has it. What a model knows from its training data changes only when the company trains and releases a new model.
| AI surface | What it reads | How fast changes can show |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's search index | As fast as Google indexes and ranks you |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot | Once crawled and indexed: days to weeks |
| Perplexity | Its own crawler, PerplexityBot, plus live page visits | Days to weeks |
| Claude with web search | Pages found by Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot and fetched by Claude-User | Days to weeks |
| An AI model's built-in knowledge | Training data collected before a cutoff date | Only when a new model is released |
The live-search clock is the one that matters for most businesses. Google's guide to generative AI search says AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve pages from Google's own index, and that there are no extra requirements beyond normal SEO. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in its answers. Our guide to where AI assistants get their information covers each one.
The training clock is slower and outside your control. Model makers publish a training data cutoff for each model; Anthropic, for example, lists one for every Claude model in its documentation. Anything published after that date isn't part of the model's built-in knowledge, and you can't choose whether your pages make it into the next training run.
Being indexed is not the same as being recommended. An assistant can find your page within days and still name a competitor, because it weighs reviews, mentions on other sites and how clearly each page answers the question. That part takes months, just as it does in Google.
Is AI search optimisation faster than SEO?
AI search optimisation is faster only at the first step. Once your pages are crawlable and clear, assistants with live search can find them as soon as they are indexed, so fixing a blocked crawler or a missing service page can show up within weeks.
Everything after that runs on the same clock as SEO. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking systems, which retrieve the pages its AI answers draw on. So the authority that takes months to build for Google is the same authority its AI features rely on. For other assistants, being picked over a competitor depends on how clear and well-referenced your business is compared with theirs: reviews, mentions on credible sites and consistent facts. Those also build over months.
That's why we treat SEO and AI search as one programme with one timeline, not two projects. If you'd like the difference explained in full, read SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
What should you expect month by month?
Expect technical fixes and visibility data in the first months, rising impressions and long-tail rankings next, and enquiries and competitive rankings later. This is a typical path for a small business site with steady work.
| Month | Work done | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Audit, tracking, technical fixes, Google Business Profile, robots.txt and sitemap checks | Pages indexed; clean data in Search Console |
| 2 | Service and product pages rewritten; FAQs and structured data added | Impressions start rising for specific, long searches |
| 3 | First guides published; internal links; first reviews and listings | Some long-tail searches reach page one; first organic enquiries |
| 4 to 6 | Regular guides, review requests, earned mentions and links | Clicks and enquiries trend up; AI assistants with live search start citing specific pages |
| 7 to 12 | More depth on main topics; pages updated with new facts | Movement on competitive searches; AI answers describe you more accurately |
| 12 onwards | Maintain, update, expand to new services or cities | Traffic that tends to compound and cost less per enquiry over time |
If month three arrives with no growth in impressions and pages still not indexed, something technical is wrong. Fix it before producing more content. Our technical SEO checklist lists the usual culprits.
What speeds SEO up?
SEO moves faster when you remove blockers early, target specific searches first, and build trust signals from day one.
- Fix technical blockers first. A stray
noindextag or a robots.txt block can hide a whole site. Removing it can show results within weeks. - Start with specific searches. "Office furniture delivery in Tema" moves faster than "office furniture".
- Use the authority you already have. An older domain with existing links ranks new pages faster than a new domain.
- Complete your Google Business Profile and ask for reviews. This is often the fastest route for local businesses.
- Earn real mentions. Coverage in Ghanaian news sites, trade associations and partner websites builds authority that compounds.
- Link new pages from strong ones. A new service page linked from your homepage gets crawled and trusted sooner.
- Act on recommendations quickly. A fix that waits six weeks for approval adds six weeks to every timeline above.
What doesn't speed SEO up?
Shortcuts that try to manipulate rankings either do nothing or put the site at risk.
- Buying links. Google's spam policies list "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as link spam.
- Mass-producing pages. Google's generative AI guide warns that creating pages for every search variation mainly to manipulate rankings violates its scaled content abuse policy.
- Changing dates without changing content. Google's helpful content guidance specifically asks whether you are changing dates "to make them seem fresh when the content has not substantially changed".
- Adding llms.txt for Google. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt files; they neither help nor harm rankings there.
- Requesting indexing over and over. Google's documentation says requesting a crawl doesn't guarantee inclusion.
- Switching agencies every two months. Each restart can set the clock back.
How can you tell SEO is working before rankings move?
Leading indicators move before sales do, so watch them monthly.
- Indexed pages in Search Console's page indexing report.
- Impressions in Search Console, especially for long, specific searches.
- Average position for your target searches, even when they're still on page two.
- The Generative AI performance report in Search Console, which Google recommends for measuring visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- AI answers. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same set of buyer questions each month. See how to measure AI search visibility.
- Enquiry source. Ask every new customer how they found you.
Common questions
Can SEO work in one month?
Some fixes can, such as removing an accidental block or completing a Google Business Profile. Ranking for competitive searches in one month is unrealistic for almost every business.
Is Google Ads faster than SEO?
Yes. Ads can bring clicks the day they go live, but they stop when the budget stops. Many businesses run ads while SEO builds. See SEO vs Google Ads.
Why did my rankings rise and then drop?
New pages often move around while Google tests them, and Google says it makes broad "core updates" to its ranking systems several times a year. Judge trends over months, not days.
How soon will ChatGPT mention my business?
If ChatGPT's search can crawl your site, your pages can be found within days to weeks. Being recommended over competitors depends on reviews, mentions and clarity, and usually takes months. Nobody can guarantee it.
Does publishing more blog posts make SEO faster?
Only if each post answers a real question better than what already ranks. Ten useful guides usually beat fifty thin ones.
Can I stop SEO once I'm ranking?
You can slow down, but competitors keep working and information goes out of date. Keep updating your main pages and adding the questions customers ask.
