SEO vs GEO vs AEO: What's the Difference, and Which Do You Need?

SEO gets you ranked in search results, AEO gets you chosen as the direct answer, and GEO gets you cited in AI-written answers. Most businesses need all three, built on one foundation.

SEO (search engine optimisation) gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) gets your content picked as the single direct answer, in a featured snippet, a voice reply or an AI summary. GEO (generative engine optimisation) gets your business named and cited when ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot or Google's AI features write an answer.

They overlap heavily. The honest summary: SEO is the foundation, AEO is how you write on top of it, and GEO is how you make sure the wider web, not just Google, describes your business correctly.

What do SEO, GEO and AEO each mean?

Each term describes the same goal, being found, measured against a different kind of result.

SEO: search engine optimisation

SEO is the work of making your website rank in the list of results on Google and Bing. It covers technical health (can search engines crawl and index the site?), relevance (does the page match what people search for?) and authority (do other credible sites link to and mention you?). Success is a click to your site. See SEO for small businesses in Ghana.

AEO: answer engine optimisation

AEO is the work of making your content the answer a system reads out or displays directly: a featured snippet at the top of Google, a People Also Ask box, a voice assistant's spoken reply, or a passage quoted in an AI summary. It is mostly about how you write and structure a page: question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first sentence, lists and tables. Our full guide is What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?.

GEO: generative engine optimisation

GEO is the work of getting your business mentioned, recommended and cited inside answers that large language models generate. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal and colleagues, later accepted at the KDD 2024 conference. GEO goes beyond your own pages: it includes whether AI crawlers can read your site, whether your business facts match everywhere, and whether independent sources talk about you. See our introduction to GEO.

SEO vs GEO vs AEO at a glance

The clearest difference is the unit of success: SEO wins a ranking, AEO wins an answer slot, GEO wins a mention.

Are they really different disciplines?

They are one discipline with three emphases, and anyone who sells them as unrelated products is overselling. Google's own guide to generative AI features, published in May 2026, says plainly that "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." The same guide says you don't need special AI text files, special markup or a special writing style to appear in Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode.

That is true for Google. It is not the whole picture, for three reasons:

  • Other AI products crawl separately. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Perplexity documents PerplexityBot, and Anthropic documents Claude-SearchBot. A site that blocks them, often by accident through a security plugin or a firewall rule, can rank well on Google and still be missing from those answers.
  • AI answers lean on what others say about you. A list of results lets the searcher judge ten sites. An AI answer does the judging for them, naming a few businesses and summarising them. What reviews, directories, news sites and "best of" lists say about you shapes that summary.
  • The measurement is different. A ranking report tells you nothing about whether ChatGPT recommends you, or whether Gemini has your opening hours wrong.

So the useful distinction is not "three services". It is three questions. Can people find my pages (SEO)? When they ask a question, is my answer the one they get (AEO)? When an AI describes my category, am I in it and is the description correct (GEO)?

Why does the difference matter now?

It matters because AI answers reduce clicks, so being named in the answer matters more than ranking below it. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025 and found that people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not. Clicks on links inside the summary itself happened in just 1% of visits.

The lesson is not that SEO is dead. Google says its AI features are built on its core ranking and quality systems, so ranking is still how you get into them. The lesson is that a page-one ranking under an AI answer is worth less than it was, and being the source the answer is built from is worth more.

Which do you need? A decision guide

Most businesses need all three, but not in equal measure or in the same order. Use your situation to set the priority.

Your situationStart withThen add
New website, little or no Google trafficSEO: indexing, speed, one page per serviceAEO writing on every new page
Local business that sells in one area (a clinic in Kumasi, a mechanic in Takoradi)SEO: Google Business Profile, reviews, local pagesGEO: consistent facts across directories and profiles
You rank well but traffic is fallingAEO: rewrite top pages answer-firstGEO: check what AI says about you and fix gaps
Buyers research for weeks before buying (B2B, real estate, schools, software)GEO: be named in "best" and comparison answersAEO: comparison tables and FAQs on your own site
Customers ask out loud on their phones ("open now", "near me")SEO: Google Business ProfileAEO: short, direct answers to spoken questions
AI assistants describe you wrongly, or mix you up with another businessGEO: entity statement, consistent facts, corrected profilesSEO: a strong about page and service pages

If you can only do one thing this month, do this order:

  1. Make sure you can be found at all. Your site is indexed in Google and Bing, and your robots.txt does not block search or AI crawlers you want.
  2. Make sure your facts are right everywhere. Name, location, services, phone, hours: identical on your site, Google Business Profile, social pages and directories.
  3. Make your key pages answer questions directly. One page per service, each starting with a plain answer to what buyers ask.
  4. Earn mentions from places that aren't you. Reviews, local press, industry associations, partner sites.
  5. Measure all three. Rankings and clicks in Search Console, a monthly set of AI prompts, and AI referrals in your analytics.

How do the three work together on one page?

One well-built page serves all three at once, which is why splitting them into separate projects wastes money. Take a solar installer in Kumasi with a page called "Solar panel installation in Kumasi".

  • SEO makes sure the page is indexed, loads quickly on mobile data, targets the phrase people actually type, and earns a few links from local sites.
  • AEO shapes the writing. The page opens with one sentence saying what the company installs, where and roughly how long it takes. Headings are the questions buyers ask: "How much does a home solar system cost?", "Can I pay in instalments with MoMo?". A table compares system sizes.
  • GEO looks beyond the page. The company's name, address and service area match on its Google profile, Facebook page and directory listings. Customers mention the installation in Google reviews. A local news site covers a school it powered. When someone asks ChatGPT for "reliable solar installers in Kumasi", there is now consistent, independent evidence for the AI to draw on.

None of that is three times the work. It is one job done properly.

What does this look like on a real site?

On mediawura.com we treat all three as one system. Every service has its own page with an FAQ. The robots.txt explicitly allows named search and AI crawlers, including Googlebot, Bingbot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and blocks only a few private paths. The site publishes an llms.txt file, the about page has a "Company facts" table, and one entity statement is reused word for word in the site's structured data and llms.txt files.

Some of that, such as llms.txt, Google says it does not need. We do it anyway because Google is not the only reader, and it costs very little. That is the practical attitude to take: build for Google first, then remove anything that stops the other engines reading you. Read more in what llms.txt is.

Common questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Very close, and many people use them interchangeably. AEO usually means winning the direct answer on a single question, including featured snippets and voice. GEO usually means being cited and recommended in AI-generated answers, which also depends on your reputation across the web.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google says its AI features rely on its core ranking systems, and other AI tools retrieve pages from search indexes too. If your SEO is weak, your GEO will be weak.

Do I need separate agencies for SEO and GEO?

Usually not. One team that understands both can usually do the work more cheaply and consistently. Be wary of anyone selling GEO as a separate product that ignores your site's basic SEO. See what a GEO agency does.

Which is fastest to show results?

AEO changes to existing pages that already rank can show up within weeks, once Google recrawls them. New SEO rankings and changes in what AI assistants say about you usually take months. Nobody can promise either.

Can I check whether AI mentions my business?

Yes. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot the questions your buyers ask, record the answers each month, and track AI referrals in your analytics. Our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT explains how.
