What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is structuring your content so search engines, voice assistants and AI tools use it as the direct answer to a question. Here's how it works and how to do it.

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools use it as the direct answer to someone's question. Instead of aiming for a place in a list of ten links, you aim to be the one answer that gets shown, read aloud or quoted. In practice, that means question-shaped headings, a clear answer in the first sentence, and facts that are easy to lift out and trust.

What counts as an answer engine?

An answer engine is any system that replies to a question with an answer rather than a list of pages. Today that includes:

  • Google featured snippets: the boxed answer above the normal results.
  • People Also Ask: the expandable list of related questions in Google results, each with a short answer from a web page.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: AI-written answers in Google Search, with links to supporting pages.
  • Voice assistants: Gemini and Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa, which usually read out one answer.
  • AI assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and the Gemini app, which write answers and often cite sources.

Each one has the same job: take a question, find the most useful passage, give it back. AEO is making your passage the obvious choice.

How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?

AEO is a layer on top of SEO, focused on the answer rather than the ranking. SEO makes sure your page can be found and ranks. AEO makes sure that once a system is looking at your page, it can find a clean, quotable answer. GEO, generative engine optimisation, widens the view to your whole reputation across the web, because AI assistants also weigh what others say about you.

Google's position, set out in its May 2026 guide to generative AI features in Search, is that all of this is still SEO. That is a fair reminder: AEO without SEO underneath does nothing. For a side-by-side comparison, read SEO vs GEO vs AEO.

How do featured snippets work?

Google's systems choose a featured snippet automatically from pages that already rank for the query, and you cannot mark up a page to request one. Google's Search Central documentation answers the question "Can I mark my page to be a featured snippet?" with one word: "You can't."

What you can do is make your page the easiest to quote. Featured snippets come in three common shapes, and each rewards a matching format:

Snippet typeTypical questionWhat to write
Paragraph"What is a sales funnel?"A 40 to 60 word definition directly under a heading that repeats the question
List"How to register a business name"A numbered list of steps, each starting with a verb
Table"Facebook ads vs Google ads"A simple comparison table with clear row and column labels

If you ever need to keep a page out of featured snippets, Google documents the nosnippet and max-snippet rules and the data-nosnippet attribute. Most businesses want the opposite.

How do you get into People Also Ask?

People Also Ask answers are pulled from pages that address a closely related question clearly, so the method is the same as for snippets, applied to many questions at once. Google does not publish rules for this feature, so treat the following as good practice, not a formula:

  • Search your main topics and note every question Google suggests in the box.
  • Write a heading that matches each question in the words people use.
  • Answer it fully in the first one or two sentences under that heading.
  • Add detail afterwards for the people who keep reading.

A Common questions section at the end of each page, like the one on this page, is the simplest way to cover the follow-up questions buyers ask. Our guide to keyword research for the Ghanaian market shows how to find them.

How does AEO work for voice search?

Voice assistants usually read one answer aloud, so voice is the purest form of AEO: there is no second place. Two things are changing how this works.

First, the assistants are becoming AI assistants. Google has been replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones, and Siri can pass questions to ChatGPT when the user agrees. So voice answers increasingly come from the same systems that write AI answers on screen.

Second, the special voice markup is narrow. Google's speakable structured data is still labelled beta, works only for users in the US with Google Home devices set to English, and is aimed at news content. For most businesses it is irrelevant.

What actually helps with voice:

  • Short, spoken-style answers. One or two sentences that make sense read aloud with no visual context.
  • Natural question phrasing. People speak in full questions: "Where can I buy a used fridge in Tema?", not "used fridge Tema".
  • Local facts kept current. Many voice questions are local and urgent ("open now", "near me"). Those are answered from your Google Business Profile, so hours, phone and location must be right. See local SEO in Ghana.

How does AEO work for AI answers?

AI answers are built by retrieving pages from a search index, then writing a summary that quotes or cites the most useful passages. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out", issuing several related searches across subtopics to build a response. That means a single clear section on your page can be picked up for a question you never targeted directly.

Google also says there are no extra technical requirements: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Other AI products use their own crawlers. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Perplexity says PerplexityBot is what surfaces and links websites in its results. Check that your robots.txt and firewall let them in.

On writing style, the best public evidence comes from the 2023 research paper that coined GEO. Its authors tested ways of rewriting web content and found that adding quotations, statistics and citations to credible sources raised visibility in AI answers on their benchmark, while keyword stuffing performed worse than doing nothing. Specific, sourced, readable content tends to win. Repetition does not.

How do you do AEO? A step-by-step method

AEO is a writing and structuring habit you apply page by page, starting with the pages that already get traffic.

  1. List the real questions. Collect them from WhatsApp chats, sales calls, Google's People Also Ask box and Search Console queries. Use the customer's words.
  2. Give each important question a home. One page per service or topic, with question-shaped H2 and H3 headings.
  3. Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading. Write it so it still makes sense if lifted out alone.
  4. Match the format to the question. Definitions as short paragraphs, processes as numbered steps, comparisons as tables.
  5. Be specific. Names, places, numbers, timeframes, prices where you can publish them. "We deliver across Accra within 24 hours, paid by MoMo on delivery" beats "fast, convenient delivery".
  6. Show who is answering. An author, a date, a clear about page and consistent business facts make your answer easier to trust.
  7. Open the doors. Make sure Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers you want can reach the page.
  8. Keep it current. Update answers when prices, policies or products change, and change the date when you do.

What does answer-first writing look like?

Answer-first writing puts the conclusion before the explanation. Here is the same section from a hypothetical Accra furniture shop, written two ways.

Before: "At our company, customer satisfaction is our top priority. We have worked hard over the years to build a delivery network that serves many parts of the country, and we are always happy to discuss your needs."

After: "Yes, we deliver to Kumasi. Delivery takes two to three working days and you can pay by MoMo or cash on delivery. Larger items such as wardrobes are assembled free on arrival."

The second version answers the question, gives the facts an assistant needs, and can be quoted on its own. The first gives an answer engine nothing to use. More examples are in our guide to writing content that AI answers quote.

Does FAQ schema still help AEO?

FAQ structured data no longer earns a special result in Google: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026 and has since removed their documentation. Google's generative AI guide also says no special schema.org markup is needed for its AI features, though it recommends that any structured data you use matches the visible text.

So the visible questions and answers are what count. We still keep FAQPage markup on mediawura.com service pages, because it is a clean machine-readable copy of content that is already on the page and costs nothing to maintain. Just don't expect it to move rankings on its own. Organization and LocalBusiness markup, which state who you are, where and how to reach you, remain worth adding. How do you measure AEO?

Measure AEO by tracking which answers you win and what the answers say, not only rankings. Useful sources:

  • Google Search Console: the Performance report includes traffic from AI features, and Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports in June 2026, rolling out gradually.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: its AI Performance report, launched in public preview in 2026, shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI answers.
  • A fixed prompt list: ten to twenty buyer questions you ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot each month, recording whether you appear and whether the facts are right.
  • Your own enquiries: ask new customers where they heard of you.

See how to measure your visibility in AI search.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Burying the answer under three paragraphs of introduction.
  • Headings written as clever slogans instead of the questions people ask.
  • One long "Services" page that tries to answer everything at once.
  • Different prices, hours or locations on different pages and profiles.
  • Writing for a keyword and repeating it, which the GEO research found counterproductive.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or firewall.

Common questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap. AEO focuses on winning the direct answer to a question, including featured snippets and voice. GEO focuses on being cited and recommended in AI-generated answers, which also depends on your reputation beyond your own website.

Can I guarantee a featured snippet or AI answer?

No. Google chooses featured snippets automatically and says you cannot request one, and no one controls what AI assistants write. You can only make your answer clear, specific and credible.

How long should an AEO answer be?

The first answer under a heading should usually be one to three sentences, often 40 to 60 words. Add depth below it for readers who want more. Google says there is no ideal page length overall.

Do I need llms.txt for AEO?

Not for Google, which says it does not need AI text files. Some other tools may read it, and it is cheap to add, so it is optional rather than essential. See what llms.txt is.

Does AEO work for small local businesses?

Yes, and it can work especially well for them. Local questions ("Who repairs AC units in Tema?") often have few good answers online, so a clear page and a complete Google Business Profile can stand out quickly.
