Make AI Videos Yourself or Hire an AI Video Agency?

AI video tools are available to everyone. So why pay an agency? An honest comparison of doing it yourself, hiring a freelancer and hiring an AI video agency, and how to decide.

Every AI video tool now advertises the same promise: type what you want, get a professional video. So it's fair to ask why you'd pay an agency to do what you could do yourself.

Here's an honest answer, from an AI video agency.

When doing it yourself makes sense

You should make your own AI videos if:

  • You're just starting and need a few simple product videos.
  • You enjoy it and have the time to learn the tools.
  • You have a good eye and already know what makes your buyers tick.
  • Your ad budget is small enough that testing volume doesn't matter yet.

Many founders get decent results this way, and the learning is useful even if you hire someone later.

The hidden costs of doing it yourself

Your time

Learning the tools, writing scripts, generating, regenerating, editing, captioning and exporting in five formats takes hours per video. If you run a business doing GH₵ 20,000 or more a month, those hours are probably worth more spent on sales, suppliers or staff.

Knowing what to make

The tools are easy. Knowing what to say is hard. Most DIY AI videos look fine and say nothing that makes someone buy. They describe the product instead of answering the buyer's doubt. See AI ad scripts.

Volume

Meta's ad system rewards many genuinely different adverts. One founder making one or two videos a week can't produce the variety needed to find winners quickly. See Meta's Andromeda update.

Reading the results

Making the video is half the job. The other half is reading the numbers, knowing which video won and why, and making the next round. Without that loop, you're producing content, not running a testing system.

Subscriptions add up

Good results usually need several tools: one for video, one for voice, one for images, one for editing. The monthly costs add up, and the tools change constantly.

When a freelancer is enough

A good freelancer can be right if you already know what to say and just need production. You write the scripts, they make the videos. The risk is that you end up managing them and doing the strategy yourself.

When an agency is worth it

An AI video agency is worth the fee when:

  • You're spending meaningful money on adverts and the creative is the bottleneck.
  • You've stopped seeing results from your existing videos. See ad fatigue.
  • You want research, scripts, production and testing in one place.
  • You'd rather spend your time running the business.

The test is simple: if better adverts would lower your cost per sale enough to cover the fee, an agency pays for itself.

A middle path

Some clients make simple everyday content themselves, such as stories, behind-the-scenes and quick updates, and hire an agency for the adverts. That's often the best of both: your real voice on your page, and tested, high-volume creative in your ad account.

How to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Is my creative the main reason my adverts aren't performing better?
  2. Do I have the hours to make five to ten genuinely different adverts a week?
  3. Do I know how to read the results and act on them?

If the answers are yes, no and no, hire help. Read how to choose the best AI video agency before you do.

Common questions

Can I start myself and switch to an agency later?

Yes. Keep your files and results. A good agency will learn from what you've already tested.

Will an agency make my brand feel less personal?

Not if they do their research. A good agency writes in your voice and uses your real product and customers' words.
