How to Write Video Ad Scripts With AI (That Don't Sound Like AI)
AI can draft dozens of ad scripts in minutes, and most of them will be generic. How to brief AI properly, the structure that sells, and how to edit scripts until they sound like your customers.
Ask an AI assistant to "write a video ad for my shoe shop" and you'll get something like: "Step into style with our amazing collection! Quality you can trust. Shop now!"
That script will not sell anything. Not because AI can't write, but because it was given nothing to work with. Here's how to get scripts that actually sound like your market.
Start with research, not prompts
Before you open an AI tool, collect:
- Customer words: reviews, DMs and comments, in the exact language people use.
- Objections: the questions and doubts people raise before buying.
- Reasons people bought: what made them choose you.
- The offer: price, delivery, payment options, guarantee.
- Who it's for: age, city, lifestyle, what they care about.
Paste this into the chat. This is what turns generic copy into specific copy.
Use a structure that sells
Most short video adverts follow a simple shape:
| Part | Length | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | 0 to 3 seconds | Stop the scroll |
| Problem or desire | 3 to 8 seconds | Make them feel seen |
| Solution | 8 to 15 seconds | Show the product as the answer |
| Proof | 15 to 20 seconds | Reviews, demonstration, numbers |
| Offer and action | Last 5 seconds | What to do now |
A prompt that works
You're writing 15 to 25 second vertical video adverts for Instagram and TikTok. The brand sells handmade leather bags in Accra from GH₵ 300 to GH₵ 600, with free delivery in Accra and pay on delivery.
Customers are women aged 25 to 40 who work in offices. Their biggest complaint about other bags is that they peel within months. They love that ours are handmade and come with a one-year guarantee.
Here are real customer reviews: [paste].
Write 8 scripts, each with a completely different hook and angle: problem-solution, customer story, comparison, unboxing, founder, objection, offer and "3 reasons". Use simple, conversational Ghanaian English. Include on-screen text and visual directions.
Edit like a human
AI drafts need editing. Check each script for:
- Clichés: "elevate", "unleash", "game-changer", "step into". Cut them.
- Vagueness: replace "high quality" with what makes it high quality.
- Length: read it aloud with a timer. Most scripts are too long.
- Voice: would your customer say it this way? Would you?
- Claims: can you prove every one?
Hooks are the whole game
On social media, the first two seconds decide everything. Ask AI for 20 hooks for each script and pick the strongest three to test. See ad hooks that stop the scroll.
Test, then feed results back
Run several scripts as adverts. When results come in, tell the AI which won and why you think so, and ask for new scripts in the same direction. Over time, your prompts become a record of what works for your buyers.
Common questions
Can AI write in local languages?
It can try, but quality varies. Have a fluent speaker check any Twi, Ga, Ewe or other local language before it goes out.
Should the voiceover be AI too?
It can be, if it sounds natural for your audience. Test a few voices, and use a real voice when AI doesn't sound right.
How many scripts do I need?
Enough to test several distinct concepts at once, and refresh every week or two. See how to test ad creatives.
