12 Ways to Get Customers to Buy Again (and Again)
Winning a new customer costs far more than keeping one. Twelve practical ways Ghanaian businesses can turn one-time buyers into regulars, with the messages and offers to use.
Most businesses spend almost everything on finding new customers and almost nothing on keeping the ones they have. That's backwards. A past customer already trusts you, already knows how to pay, and doesn't need an advert to find you.
Here are twelve ways to turn one-time buyers into regulars.
1. Deliver an experience worth repeating
Repeat business starts with the first order. On time, well packed, exactly as described, with a friendly message. If the first experience is average, nothing else on this list will work.
2. Send a thank-you message after delivery
A short, personal note the day after: "Hi Efua, hope the bag arrived safely. Thank you for buying from us. If anything isn't right, just reply here." It's simple and most businesses don't do it.
3. Include something in the parcel
A handwritten card, a small sample, a discount card for the next order, or care instructions. People remember the unboxing.
4. Keep a customer list
You can't bring people back if you don't know who they are. Record every customer's name, number, what they bought and when. A simple spreadsheet works to start. A checkout that builds the list automatically is better. See CRM for Ghanaian businesses.
5. Remind people when it's time to reorder
Skincare runs out. Hair products run out. Food runs out. If a product lasts about a month, send a friendly reminder after three or four weeks. "Your shea butter should be running low. Want the same again?"
6. Tell past customers first
New stock, restocks and launches: give past customers early access before you post publicly. It makes them feel valued and creates urgency.
7. Offer a loyal-customer discount
A small reward for coming back: a discount on the third order, free delivery for regulars, or a birthday treat. Keep it simple enough to explain in one sentence.
8. Recommend what goes with what they bought
Bought a phone? Suggest a case and screen protector. Bought a dress? Show the matching bag. Base it on the real purchase, not random promotions.
9. Use broadcasts, carefully
WhatsApp broadcasts and SMS reach customers directly. Send useful things, not daily spam: new arrivals, real offers, helpful tips. Two to four messages a month is plenty for most businesses. See WhatsApp broadcasts and SMS marketing in Ghana.
10. Fix problems generously
A late delivery or wrong item handled well can create a more loyal customer than a perfect order. Apologise, fix it fast, and add something extra. Never argue in public.
11. Ask for feedback and act on it
"What's one thing we could do better?" Customers who are asked feel heard. And their answers tell you what to fix.
12. Retarget past buyers with adverts
Upload your customer list to Meta as a custom audience and show them new products. They already know you, so these adverts are often among the cheapest sales you'll get. See retargeting ads in Ghana.
Measure it
Track two numbers every month:
| Number | How to work it out |
|---|---|
| Repeat rate | Customers who bought more than once, divided by all customers |
| Lifetime value | Average total spend per customer over a year |
If your repeat rate goes up, every advert you run becomes more profitable, because each new customer is worth more. See customer lifetime value.
