How to Sell to Ghanaians Abroad: UK, US and Europe
Ghanaians abroad buy from home, for themselves and for family in Ghana. How to reach the diaspora with adverts, take international payments and deliver, and the offers that work.
There are large Ghanaian communities in the UK, the US, Canada, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, among others. Many of them still buy from Ghana: food, fashion, beauty products, gifts for family, land and houses, and services back home.
For the right business, the diaspora is a valuable market. They often spend more per order, pay in stronger currencies, and come back regularly. Here's how to sell to them.
Two ways the diaspora buys
1. Buying for themselves abroad
Products shipped to them: Ghanaian fashion, fabrics, shea butter and skincare, foods and spices, art and crafts.
2. Buying for family in Ghana
Gifts, groceries, school supplies, phones, appliances and services delivered to family members in Ghana. This is often simpler for you, because delivery is local.
The second is often the easier place to start.
Reaching them with adverts
On Facebook and Instagram, you can target adverts at cities or countries abroad. Combine location with creative that speaks clearly to Ghanaians abroad:
- "Send a Christmas hamper to your family in Kumasi."
- "Authentic kente, made in Bonwire, shipped to London."
- "Missing home? Real shito, delivered in the UK."
Meta's system uses your creative to find the right people, so make it obvious who the advert is for. See Facebook ad targeting in Ghana.
Seasonal moments matter: Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, December visits home, weddings and funerals. See festive season ads.
Taking international payments
Most diaspora buyers will want to pay by card. Make sure your checkout accepts international Visa and Mastercard, and check the fees, which are usually higher than for local payments.
Show prices clearly. Some businesses show prices in the buyer's currency; others show cedis with an approximate conversion. Either way, avoid surprises at checkout.
Delivering abroad
If you ship abroad:
- Check what you can send. Foods, cosmetics and some materials have import rules in each country.
- Choose a courier with tracking and reasonable rates for your package sizes.
- Price shipping honestly. International shipping is expensive; build it into prices or show it upfront.
- Allow for customs. Explain who pays any import duties and how long it might take.
- Consider consolidating: shipping in bulk to a partner abroad who handles local delivery.
Delivering in Ghana for buyers abroad
For gifts and family purchases:
- Take the recipient's name, number and address.
- Confirm delivery with the recipient before dispatch.
- Send the buyer photos or a confirmation when it's delivered. This builds enormous trust.
- Offer gift messages and wrapping.
Building trust from a distance
Diaspora buyers often worry about scams from home. Address that directly:
- Clear business details, address and phone number.
- Reviews from other diaspora customers.
- Delivery confirmation photos.
- A clear refund and replacement policy.
- Fast replies, even across time zones. Automated first replies help. See should you let AI answer your customers?.
Common questions
