Marketing for Fashion and Beauty Brands in Ghana
Fashion and beauty brands in Ghana grow on short video, creators and many tested adverts, then win on fit and shade trust, safe pay on delivery and WhatsApp repeat sales.
Many fashion and beauty brands in Ghana hit the same ceiling. The photos are beautiful, the likes are steady, and the sales come from the same few hundred loyal customers, while every new collection costs another shoot and another month of hoping.
Breaking through takes a system, not a prettier feed: lots of short video, creators, many adverts tested every week, answers to "will it fit?" and "will this shade suit me?" before anyone asks, pay on delivery that doesn't bleed money, and a WhatsApp list that turns first orders into fifth orders.
What does a fashion or beauty brand owner struggle with?
The daily reality is a phone full of DMs that never become orders. "Price pls." "Do you have it in 14?" "Is this the real colour?" "Can you deliver to Takoradi?" By the time you reply to all of them, many have gone quiet.
Behind the DMs sit bigger problems:
- Fit and shade returns. The dress came in the wrong size, the foundation was two shades off, and now you are paying for a second delivery.
- Pay on delivery refusals. A rider travels to Kasoa and the customer "is not around", or says the item looks different from the picture.
- Copycats and cheap imports. Another page reposts your photos, and imported fast fashion undercuts your price.
- Content that can't keep up. Every drop needs new photos and videos, and one shoot a quarter isn't enough to feed Instagram, TikTok and adverts.
- One boosted post a month, chosen because it got the most likes, which says little about whether it sells.
What has changed for fashion and beauty marketing?
Three shifts reward brands that produce more, test more and keep their customers closer.
Creative now does the targeting. Meta rebuilt its ad delivery around a system it calls Andromeda, described on Meta's engineering blog in December 2024. It reads your adverts to work out who they are for. A video of a size 16 woman in a kaftan in Osu finds a different buyer from a flat-lay of the same kaftan. One advert gives Meta one way to find buyers. Ten genuinely different ones give it ten. See Meta's Andromeda update.
AI cut the cost of making those adverts. AI product photography and AI video let you make scenes, hooks and variations for a fraction of a full shoot. Used honestly, that means more tests every week. Used dishonestly, it means returns and angry reviews (more on that below).
Organic testing got easier. Instagram's trial reels, announced on Instagram's Creators blog in December 2024, show a reel to non-followers first so you can see what works before it reaches your followers. TikTok rewards the same habit: post often, learn fast.
Buyers ask AI where to shop. People ask ChatGPT "where can I buy affordable ready-to-wear in Accra?" or "which skincare brands in Ghana suit dark skin?" Brands with a real website, consistent details and reviews get named. Brands that exist only as an Instagram handle usually don't.
What content sells fashion and beauty in Ghana?
Content that answers a buying question sells. Content that only looks good gets saved and forgotten. The formats we rely on:
- Try-ons with real sizes: "I'm 5'4", usually a 12, wearing a medium." Show the same piece on two or three body types.
- Shade swatches in daylight on several skin tones, filmed by a window, not under a ring light that changes the colour.
- Fabric close-ups and movement: how the lace falls, how the ankara holds its shape, the inside stitching.
- Get-ready-with-me videos that use your product in a real routine.
- Drop announcements with a countdown and limited quantities.
- Customer videos and photos, shared with permission. Real buyers wearing your pieces answer the fit question better than any model.
Then add creators. Micro-creators in Accra and Kumasi with engaged followings often sell better than big names. Agree in writing that you can run their videos as adverts, through Meta's partnership ads or your own account, because a creator's video often works harder as an advert than as a single post.
How should fashion brands test adverts?
Run fewer campaigns with many more creatives. A simple structure suits many brands:
- One Sales campaign, optimised for purchases, with broad targeting across the cities you deliver to.
- A steady flow of genuinely different creatives: different people, settings, hooks and formats, not the same photo with a new caption.
- A weekly review: keep the adverts that bring purchases at a cost you can afford, switch off the rest, add new ones.
- A catalogue campaign once you have a large range, so Meta can show each person the pieces they looked at.
This is where AI video ads earn their keep. From one product shoot we can produce many variations: different openings, different scenes, different voiceovers, different offers. Our creative testing framework and AI video ads service explain the method.
There is one hard rule. Never use AI to change how the product actually looks: the fit, the fabric, the colour, the finish of a foundation. Use AI for the world around the product, not the product itself. A buyer who receives something different from the advert is likely to refuse delivery, and tell her friends. Our rules for honest AI advertising are strict about this.
On TikTok, check in TikTok Ads Manager what targeting and payment options are available for your account before planning a paid budget. Organic posting and creators work regardless. See TikTok ads for Ghanaian brands.
How do you solve size and shade trust before the click?
Answer the fit question on the page, so the buyer never has to ask it in the DMs. Every product should carry:
- A size chart in centimetres with a 20-second video on how to measure yourself.
- Model details: height and size worn.
- Fit notes: "runs small, size up", "stretchy waist", "loose fit".
- For beauty, a shade guide with photos on several skin tones and a simple "send us a selfie in daylight and we'll match you" offer on WhatsApp.
- A clear exchange policy for sizes, written plainly.
Be careful with claims on skincare. If a product is presented as treating a condition, Ghana's Public Health Act requires FDA approval for that advert, and Meta's ad rules don't allow adverts that play on negative self-image to sell health-related products. Sell glow, comfort and confidence, not cures.
How do you make pay on delivery work?
Pay on delivery is how many Ghanaians prefer to buy from a brand they haven't tried, so the goal is to make it safe, not to refuse it.
- Confirm every order on WhatsApp before dispatch, with a photo of the exact item and size.
- Take delivery fees, or a small commitment payment, by MoMo for orders outside your city.
- Track refusal rates by area and by advert, and tighten confirmation where they are high.
- Make the product look exactly like the advert, because that removes one of the most common reasons for refusal.
PayLead, the selling platform from Wura Group (MediaWura's parent company), gives you a store with checkout that takes MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo MoMo, cards and pay on delivery, plus cart reminders and WhatsApp broadcasts. See 12 ways to reduce failed deliveries.
How do you turn first-time buyers into regulars?
Often your best future customer is someone who already bought, so build the WhatsApp list with consent from the first order. Ask every buyer to save your number for early access to new drops, then group them by what they buy: sizes, categories, wigs or skincare.
- Send new drops to past buyers before you post them publicly.
- Send restock alerts for the bestsellers people missed.
- Remind skincare and haircare buyers before their product runs out.
- Keep it to about once a week, and make it easy to opt out.
WhatsApp has been testing limits on broadcasts and a paid broadcast feature for business accounts since 2025, as TechCrunch reported in March 2025, so a smaller list of people who asked to hear from you is worth more than a big list of strangers. See WhatsApp broadcasts that don't get you blocked.
What mistakes hold fashion and beauty brands back?
- Judging adverts by likes instead of purchases.
- Running the same three adverts for months until they stop working.
- Filtering or editing products until they no longer match what arrives.
- No size chart, no shade guide, so every sale needs a conversation.
- Sending every enquiry to "DM for price".
- Ignoring past customers while paying to find new ones.
Where does MediaWura fit in?
We run this playbook for SneakersINN, the sneakers and streetwear brand in the Wura Group family: we built their websites and we run their ads, SEO and AEO (answer engine optimisation). Over six months that work brought in about GH₵150,000 in sales. It's where we test what we later build for other brands.
For a fashion or beauty brand, the first steps we'd take are:
- Audit your ad account, tracking and the last 30 days of WhatsApp chats to see where sales die.
- Fix the product pages: size charts, shade guides, real prices and a one-tap way to buy.
- Build a weekly creative engine, mixing real shoots, creators and AI video ads.
- Restructure the adverts into a simple Sales setup with constant testing. See our e-commerce ads service.
- Set up a WhatsApp list and a repeat-purchase calendar.
Common questions
Should a fashion brand in Ghana focus on Instagram or TikTok?
Both, with different jobs. Meta's adverts give you mature tools for selling across Instagram and Facebook, while TikTok is strong for organic reach and creators. Post the same short videos to both and let results decide your budget.
Are AI-generated adverts acceptable for fashion?
Yes, for scenes, hooks, voiceovers and variations. Not for changing how the garment or product actually looks, because that leads to returns and refusals.
How many adverts should I be running?
Enough genuinely different creatives that you can switch off losers every week and still have several running. Small budgets need fewer adverts at a time, but they still need fresh ones regularly.
How do I reduce pay on delivery refusals?
Confirm every order on WhatsApp, collect delivery fees or a small commitment payment upfront for distant orders, and make sure your adverts show exactly what arrives.
Do I need a website if I sell on Instagram?
If you want to scale adverts and be named by AI search tools, yes. A store with proper checkout lets Meta track purchases, and gives ChatGPT and Google something to read about you.
