WordPress, Shopify, PayLead or Custom-Built: Which Is Right for You?
The platform you build on affects cost, speed, payments and how easily you can grow. A plain comparison for Ghanaian businesses choosing a website or online shop platform.
Before you build a website or online shop, you have to choose what to build it on. Ask five developers and you'll get five answers. Here's a plain comparison for Ghanaian businesses.
The main options
WordPress
The world's most popular website platform. Very flexible, with thousands of themes and plugins. WooCommerce turns it into a shop.
Good for: content-heavy websites, blogs, service businesses, and shops with a developer to maintain them.
Watch out for: plugin overload, security updates, speed problems if poorly built, and hosting quality.
Shopify
A hosted e-commerce platform. You pay a monthly subscription and get a shop, hosting and security handled for you.
Good for: online shops with larger catalogues that want a polished, reliable platform.
Watch out for: monthly fees in dollars, app costs that add up, and checking that the payment options you need for Ghana, especially mobile money, are properly supported through a compatible payment provider.
PayLead
A commerce platform we built for Ghanaian sellers: a store, AI-built sales pages and checkout in one link. Takes MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money, card and cash on delivery, with cart reminders, order bumps, upsells, SMS receipts and WhatsApp broadcasts built in.
Good for: sellers who sell through Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, product launches, funnels, digital products, events and bookings.
Watch out for: it's built for selling, not for large content websites or blogs. Many businesses pair it with a simple website.
Website builders (Wix, Squarespace and similar)
Drag-and-drop builders with hosting included.
Good for: simple brochure websites built quickly.
Watch out for: limited flexibility, payment options for Ghana, and speed.
Custom-built
Built from scratch by developers, using modern frameworks.
Good for: businesses with specific needs, high traffic, complex integrations, or custom systems. See custom software vs off-the-shelf.
Watch out for: higher upfront cost, and dependence on developers for changes unless a content system is included.

How to choose
Ask yourself:
- What will most visitors do? Read and enquire, or buy?
- How will customers pay? MoMo, card, pay on delivery?
- How many products?
- Who will update it?
- What's your budget, upfront and monthly?
- Where do your sales come from? Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, adverts?
Many Ghanaian businesses do well with a fast, simple website for credibility and Google, plus a checkout platform for selling.
Common questions
Which is cheapest?
Upfront, builders and all-in-one platforms. Over time, it depends on fees, apps, maintenance and how much each sale costs.
Can I move platforms later?
Yes, but it takes work. Choose for where you'll be in two years, not just today.
