Delivery for Online Shops in Ghana: Riders, Couriers and Pickup
How to set up delivery for an online shop in Ghana. Dispatch riders, courier companies, bus parcel services and pickup points, how to price delivery, and how to keep customers informed.
Delivery is where online shopping becomes real for your customer. Get it right and they buy again. Get it wrong, late, damaged, or lost, and no advert will win them back.
Here's how to set up delivery for an online shop in Ghana.
Your options
| Option | Best for | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Your own rider | High volume in one city | Salary, bike costs, management |
| Freelance dispatch riders | Same-day and next-day in your city | Reliability, agreed prices |
| Delivery companies and apps | Flexible volume, tracking | Fees, coverage |
| Courier companies | Between cities, valuable items | Cost, timelines |
| Bus parcel services | Affordable inter-city delivery | Buyer must collect at the station |
| Pickup point | Buyers who'd rather collect | Location, opening hours |
Most shops use a mix: riders in their own city, couriers or bus services for other cities, and pickup for buyers who want to save.
How to price delivery
You have three choices:
- Charge the real cost, by zone. Transparent, but adds to the price at checkout.
- Free delivery, built into product prices. Simple and attractive, but check your margins.
- Free above a minimum order, like free delivery over GH₵ 500. Encourages bigger orders.
Whatever you choose, show it clearly on the product page and before checkout. Surprise fees are one of the biggest reasons buyers abandon orders.
Set delivery zones
Group areas by distance and difficulty, with a price and timeline for each. For Accra, you might have central areas, outer areas and Tema or Kasoa as separate zones. Agree prices with your riders for each zone so there are no arguments.
Get addresses right
Addresses in Ghana can be tricky. Ask for:
- Area and nearest landmark.
- Street name if there is one.
- GhanaPost GPS digital address, if the customer has one.
- A phone number the rider can call.
Confirm the address when you confirm the order.
Keep customers informed
Most "where is my order?" messages can be prevented with updates:
- Order confirmed, with expected delivery date.
- Dispatched, with the rider's name or tracking link.
- Arriving soon.
- Delivered, with a thank-you and a review request.
These can be automated by SMS or WhatsApp. Checkouts like PayLead include an order tracking page and waybill printing.
Packaging
Good packaging protects the product and builds your brand. It doesn't need to be expensive: a branded sticker, a thank-you card, tissue paper or a reusable bag can turn a delivery into a moment people photograph and share. See packaging design.
Pay on delivery
If you offer it, confirm every order before dispatch and consider a small upfront deposit. Make sure riders can collect MoMo at the door. See cash on delivery in Ghana.
Delivering abroad
Selling to Ghanaians in the UK, US or Europe needs international shipping, customs knowledge and card payments. Many diaspora buyers instead buy for family in Ghana, which you can deliver locally. See selling to Ghanaians abroad.
Common questions
How much should I charge for delivery in Accra?
It depends on distance and your rider arrangements. Find out what reliable riders charge per zone, then decide whether to pass it on or absorb it.
What if a parcel is lost or damaged?
Agree responsibilities with riders and couriers upfront, photograph packed orders before dispatch, and have a clear policy for customers.
Should I offer same-day delivery?
In your own city, if you can do it reliably. Fast delivery reduces refusals and wins repeat customers.
