Is AI-Written Content Bad for SEO?
Google doesn't ban AI content, but it does punish unhelpful content. How to use AI to write for your website without hurting your rankings or your reputation.
Business owners ask us this a lot: "If I use ChatGPT to write my blog posts, will Google punish me?"
The short answer is no, not for using AI. Google punishes content that isn't helpful, however it was made. The long answer explains how to use AI without falling into that trap.
What Google actually says
Google has said publicly that it rewards high-quality, helpful content, whether written by people or with AI. What it targets is content made mainly to manipulate search rankings, especially large volumes of low-value pages produced to game search results.
So the question isn't "AI or human?". It's "is this genuinely useful to the person searching?".
Where AI content goes wrong
- It's generic. It says what every other page says, with no local knowledge, experience or detail.
- It's wrong. AI can state outdated or incorrect facts confidently, especially about laws, prices, fees and recent changes.
- It's padded. Long introductions, repeated points and filler.
- It sounds like AI. "In today's fast-paced digital landscape…" Readers notice, and leave.
- It's mass-produced. Hundreds of thin pages that each add nothing.
These problems hurt rankings and, more importantly, they hurt trust. A buyer who reads a generic, slightly wrong article on your site trusts you less.
How to use AI well
Bring the knowledge yourself
The value in your content is what you know that others don't: your experience with Ghanaian customers, your numbers, your process, your mistakes. Give AI that material and let it help you structure and draft.
Use it for the slow parts
AI is good at:
- Outlines and structures.
- First drafts from your notes.
- Turning a voice note or interview into readable text.
- Summaries, FAQs and meta descriptions.
- Suggesting questions readers might have.
Edit hard
- Cut filler and clichés.
- Add specific examples from your business.
- Check every fact, number and claim.
- Make it sound like you.
Show who wrote it
Put a real author name on posts, with a short bio. Experience and accountability matter, to readers and to Google.
A practical workflow
- Pick a topic your customers actually ask about. See keyword research for the Ghanaian market.
- Write or record your rough thoughts: what you'd tell a customer face to face.
- Ask AI for an outline and draft from those notes.
- Edit for accuracy, examples and voice.
- Add internal links to related posts and service pages.
- Publish with a clear title, description and author.
- Update it when facts change.
Does AI content help with AI search?
Clear, accurate, well-structured content helps both Google and AI assistants understand your business. Generic content doesn't help either. See how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini.
Common questions
Should I disclose that I used AI?
There's no general legal requirement for blog posts, but honesty about authorship builds trust. Many businesses note that AI tools assisted with drafting.
How many blog posts should I publish?
Quality beats quantity. A steady flow of genuinely useful posts beats a burst of thin ones. See does your business need a blog?.
