How to Name Your Business, and Check It's Available in Ghana

A good business name is easy to say, spell, search and remember. How to choose one, check it's available with the Registrar and online, and avoid names that hold you back.

Your business name will be on every advert, receipt, signboard and WhatsApp message for years. Changing it later is expensive and confusing. It's worth getting right.

What makes a good name

  • Easy to say. If people can't pronounce it, they won't recommend it.
  • Easy to spell. People need to search for it and type it into WhatsApp.
  • Memorable. Distinctive enough to stick.
  • Available. As a registered company name, domain and social handle.
  • Room to grow. "Accra Phone Repairs" is limiting if you later expand to Kumasi or start selling laptops.
  • Fits the brand. A luxury skincare brand and a budget hardware shop shouldn't sound alike.

A simple naming process

  1. Write down what you stand for: your customers, personality and what makes you different.
  2. Brainstorm widely: 50 or more options. Use words, local languages, metaphors and combinations. AI tools can help generate options.
  3. Shortlist ten. Cut anything hard to say or spell.
  4. Say them out loud on the phone: "Hello, you've reached…". Does it sound right?
  5. Check availability (see below).
  6. Test with real customers, not just friends.
  7. Pick one and commit.

Check availability

Company registration

In Ghana, businesses are registered with the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC). Search the register to check whether your name, or something very similar, is already taken, then reserve and register it through the ORC's process. Follow the ORC's current procedures and fees.

Trademarks

Registering a company name doesn't automatically protect it as a trademark. If the name is central to your brand, consider trademark registration for your logo and name. A lawyer can advise.

Domain

Check whether the .com and .com.gh versions are available. You don't need both, but owning your main one matters.

Social media

Check Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X. Consistent handles make you easier to find.

Google

Search the name. Is there a big brand, a scandal or something embarrassing with the same name?

Names to avoid

  • Names that copy or closely imitate well-known brands. That can get you into legal trouble.
  • Names with unfortunate meanings in another Ghanaian language.
  • Very long names.
  • Spellings that look clever but confuse people.
  • Names that tie you to one product or place you might outgrow.

Common questions

Should I use my own name?

It can build trust, especially for services. But it makes the business harder to separate from you if you grow or sell it.

Do I need to register before I start selling?

You can start small without registering, but register early. It protects your name and is needed for business bank accounts and most payment providers.
