In-House Marketer or Agency: Which Is Right for Your Business?
Hire a marketer, use an agency, or both? The costs, strengths and risks of each for Ghanaian businesses, and how to decide based on your size and needs.
At some point every growing business asks: should we hire someone to do our marketing, or pay an agency? Both can work. Both can fail. It depends on what you need.
What modern marketing needs
Marketing today needs many skills: strategy, copywriting, design, video, AI production, ad management, tracking, SEO, content, analytics, and sales follow-up. Very few individuals are excellent at all of them.
That's the core of the decision.
An in-house marketer
Strengths:
- Knows your business deeply.
- Available every day.
- Easy to coordinate with sales and operations.
- Builds knowledge that stays in the company.
Risks:
- One person rarely covers every skill well.
- Salary, benefits, equipment and tools add up.
- Hard to judge quality if you're not a marketer yourself.
- If they leave, much of the knowledge leaves too.
- Can get pulled into admin and other tasks.
An agency
Strengths:
- A team with several specialist skills.
- Experience across many businesses and campaigns.
- Tools and processes already in place.
- Easier to scale up or down.
Risks:
- Less time with your business than an employee.
- Quality varies widely between agencies.
- Needs clear briefs and communication.
- Can be expensive if the scope is unclear.
Side by side
| In-house | Agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Range of skills | Usually narrow | Broad |
| Knowledge of your business | Deep | Grows over time |
| Availability | Daily | Agreed hours and response times |
| Cost | Salary plus extras | Monthly or project fees |
| Risk if they leave | High | Lower, if you own accounts and files |
| Best for | Daily coordination, content, community | Strategy, ads, creative, systems |
The hybrid that often works best
Many businesses do best with both:
- An in-house coordinator who knows the business, handles daily content, community and replies, and works with the agency.
- An agency for strategy, advertising, creative production, tracking and systems.
The in-house person makes the agency better, because they provide fast answers, product knowledge and real customer feedback.
How to decide
- Under about GH₵ 20,000 a month: focus on basics yourself, perhaps with a freelancer.
- GH₵ 20,000 to GH₵ 100,000 a month: an agency for growth, maybe an in-house coordinator.
- Above that: often a small in-house team plus specialist agencies.
These are rough guides. Your margins, industry and goals matter more.
Whatever you choose
- Keep ownership of all accounts, pages, data and files.
- Agree clear goals and numbers.
- Review results monthly.
Common questions
Can I hire a junior marketer and train them?
Yes, but you need someone with the skills to train and guide them, or they'll learn by spending your money.
Is a freelancer a good middle option?
For specific tasks like design or content, yes. For a full growth system, a team usually does better.
